(Nuu! Well, okay, since you insist ....)
Chapter Five
I hadn’t even turned my head back around before I’d crashed right into ... something? It felt like cloth, but it was slick and taut. Utterly confused and probably dazed from smacking my head, I tumbled down through the air. I realized with some more confusion thrown in that this cloth was at an angle. I rolled onto the ground with a short grunt of impact.
I shot back to a standing position, shaking my head. I looked up at the incredibly huge wall of cloth before me. It had to be almost five feet high, even at an angle! It was supported by what looked like perfectly straight sticks—I wondered how anyone had managed to find those—and it was fixed to the ground at the bottom corners. I squinted at what fixed it to the ground. With a gasp I realized it was a huge spike of metal! That was supposed to be really rare around here, but here were a couple pieces bigger than myself.
My quick viewing of this expanse of cloth was cut short at a startlingly loud sound that came from somewhere behind it. “Dude, did you hear that?” it sounded like a voice. But it would have had to have come from someone absolutely huge, and that was impossible, right?
My stomach tightened to hear a reply, from an equally large voice. “What?”
“Sounded like something hit the tent.” Yeah. Me! Wait, so this was a tent? I looked up at the cloth, the “tent”, wondering what on earth it could be for.
“Well, check it out, then,” came the reply.
I glanced to the ground in great surprise when I felt odd vibrations in it. Almost like something larger than myself moving. “Oh,” I muttered very quietly as I made the connection. Whatever huge creature was on the other side of the cloth was going to step around it any second, and here I was in plain sight. The only solution that came to me, I chose. Throwing myself to the ground, I curled into a tight ball, and flared my wings a bit, draping them over myself at the same time.
I didn’t dare move from where I was, even when I heard the creature round the “tent.” With my eyes shut tight and facing the ground beneath me, I could only guess how intimidating and gruesome it looked. I waited where I was, my wings quivering ever so slightly.
“Huh,” came the impossibly loud voice from somewhere above me. “Nothing here. Whatever it was must have crawled off somewhere.” (Right. Me, a sprite, crawl.) “Wicked looking little plant back here, though.” I waited a few extra seconds even after I was sure the creature had gone back around the “tent.” You can’t be too careful.
At length, I rolled over to sit up, folding my wings tight to my back now. Hah! My little “disguise” had fooled the brute! They didn’t call me “Leafwing” for nothing!
I stood and brushed myself off. I was planning on getting out of there as soon as possible. But now, I realized, as a patrol sprite, it was my duty to figure out what was going on. I knew these creatures were about three miles away from the village, but they were hanging out in a clearing I knew very well. It was just too weird to pass up.
I crept around the cloth, going the direction opposite the one I’d heard the creature come from before. I was somewhat surprised to see ... more cloth. So this “tent” was a cloth building! Its use sort of made sense to me now, though I couldn’t imagine why they’d want a house of something as weak to the weather as cloth.
I stopped just before the far corner of the huge cloth-house. I was nervous to look at them. Who knew what face matched such scarily huge voices?
Taking a deep breath, I peered cautiously around the cloth corner, glad for the extra cover of the metal stake there (yeah, there was another one!). What I saw surprised me, but was still a bit nerve-wracking. Sitting cross-legged in a rough circle around a bed of dying embers, were three giants! Now, I’d thought I was tall for my age at four inches, but these guys towered over me even though they were sitting down. My judgment isn’t always best on this, but they looked like they’d be around six whole feet at the tallest when standing up!
They looked a lot like sprites. Except that they had no wings, oddly enough. Their faces were shaped about the same. They had hair on top of their heads, like sprites. One had brown hair, which seemed pretty normal to me, but the other two were odd-looking; one had yellowish hair, and the other’s hair was pitch black. They all three wore what looked like really thick cloth, but not quite as thick as that of their “tent.” I flinched slightly when one of them started talking. They were so loud, even though he seemed to be whispering.
“I’ve been camping plenty of times in this forest, but never ever this far into it. It’s a pretty cool place.” The yellow-haired one said. I hadn’t heard him speak before.
“Yeah,” the brown-haired one agreed with a nod. He was the one who’d come to investigate around the tent, I was sure.
The black-haired one spoke up next. “We’ll have to do some hunting tomorrow. Bet there’s deer all over the place in the backwoods here.”
I tilted my head at that. Why would they want to find deer? Sure, they were probably plenty big enough to fight one, but deer were friendly. I’d routinely spent time with a small group of them when patrolling before. With a shrug, I went back to listening to the conversation. Every once in a while, though, my gaze was drawn to the dying fire when it flickered. They were sitting so close to it, didn’t they realize fire was dangerous?
The yellow-haired one spoke again. “Hey, my grandpa told me a little story about this forest once. He says that somewhere here there’s a clearing with a super-old tree somewhere around here. And if you sleep under this tree, you’ll wake up free of any injury or pain or something like that.”
“Whatever, man. Your grandpa always has weird tales to tell like that.” The brown-haired one said, shaking his head. I almost chuckled to myself. Gramps was at least right about the “super-old” tree. But I had to stay silent. Wouldn’t want to get discovered by the giants who played with fire, after all. ~~~~~
Chapter Six
I stayed for a while longer, listening in on the conversation. I was able to figure out a lot about these strange giants. The yellow-haired one’s name was “Bobby” or something like that. The black-haired one was “Chase” (one of the weirdest names I’ve ever heard), and the brown-haired one was “Jacob.” They were close friends, from what I could tell, out “camping” for a few days. I was relieved to hear that they’d be leaving within a week or two. I’d just have to make sure no one ventured near here until then. I also learned with alarm (and some disgust) that they’d be trapping and killing animals to eat. I couldn’t imagine ever eating something except fruit and roots, and plants gave that freely. Why take from another creature?
When the embers had nearly completely died (much to my relief), “Jacob” yawned. “Well, guys, I think I’m going to go to bed here pretty quick. The hike out here really took it out of me.” The others mumbled words of agreement. They all stood up then. I looked up ... and up ... and up as they stood to their full heights. They were impossibly tall, I thought. What were these creatures?
I couldn’t stay to eavesdrop anymore, as the three of them started right towards their tent. I ducked back behind it, taking off back around it at a run. I heard a weird sound, almost like melodic tearing, at the other side of the tent. I glanced to the wall of cloth beside me and saw the vague silhouettes of the cloth-building’s new occupants. Deciding it was safe now, I unfurled my wings still at a run and flew off into the night. The nobles definitely had to hear about this. ~~~~~ (c) Neon Double post, because Chapter Six is awfully short (couldn't find a better place to split the chapters, sorry! D: )
The first human/giant sighting (Sprites are tiny, but, not having ever encountered humans before, they are giants to Bowman, make sense?). I tried to do a bit of a culture shock sort of thing. Trying to think of stuff we see as perfectly ordinary from an outside perspective is daunting. Fire is bad for you, okay? Especially if you're particularly flammable. Also, Bowman's "disguise" isn't as good as he thinks it is. It was dark.
And, of course, this isn't the last he'll see of them. I need to get some more explanations and story setup in before he actually interacts, though, okies?

Chapter Seven
I arrived back at the village in about ten minutes, maybe more, because I’d really pushed for speed. I went straight for the spruce at the end of the village just opposite the old oak. The lower branches generally housed the “wealthy” sprite families, if there was ever such a thing in our village. The middle area was home to the officials, friends of the nobles, and powerful family lines. My father lived somewhere around this area, I knew. I’d probably end up having to live on the spruce myself eventually.
The highest branches housed the largest structure in the whole village. The nobles and elders took their residence in this tree-palace. I did think, though, as I circled around to the front opening, that just one of those giant wingless creatures would find this building cramped.
I landed on the branch just outside the great doors. The lone guard there watched me, waiting for my explanation. Most of the guards knew me, because I had to report here regularly.
“I’ve got a special report to make to the nobles, sir,” I explained, a bit out of breath. “It’s urgent, there may be danger in the forest.”
The guard nodded, blinking a bit sleepily. “Right, I’ll let you in, young Bowman. And I’ll see to it that someone will hear your report,” He answered. Then, he turned to the door and pulled back the lock made of stone and wood. With a light push from him, the door swung open wide enough for me to enter. I nodded to the guard in thanks before slipping in the door, folding my wings once again as I did so. He followed, closing the door behind him, and quickly went to the right down a side hall.
I knew the way around this place; the upper floors I knew were strictly private. This base floor was for general meetings and ceremonies. I walked down the main front hall for a short distance, then made a right turn at one crossing. Down that hallway on the left was a room where I and the other scouts normally reported from our patrols.
I entered the room that was about the size of two rooms in my house. It matched the rest of the palace as far as decoration went; the floor was smoothed, polished tree-bark, as were the walls, though the walls were adorned with decorative vine markings made with dye. In the center of the room sat a rather large table, with five tall-backed chairs behind it, and then eight normal chairs in front of it. The ornate chairs were carved from solid wood, while the rest of the furniture of the room was constructed of strong twigs as usual. I took a seat in one of the normal chairs, waiting. I was glad for the small moonflowers in each corner of the room, casting their cool enchanted glow throughout for lighting.
I leaned my head on my elbow on the table, drumming my fingers nervously with my other hand. I wondered how I’d be able to prove my sighting. I’d never lied before, but even I had a hard time believing what I’d seen. It was just beyond what I thought was possible.
After an unnervingly long and silent half-hour, I heard voices in the hall. They became progressively louder and I could hear that four or five people were headed this way. I turned in my seat to the door just in time to see who was entering. Remembering formality, I stood and offered a steep bow to the nobles who entered. It looked like three of the Lords of the spruce had come, with one elder, and then the guard that had let me in. Once the nobles were in the room, though, the guard left to return to sentry duty.
I returned to my seat when the three lords nodded their heads and started around the table to the high-backed chairs, followed closely by the tottery elder. They all wore clothing of the finest cloth with fancy leaf trimmings, though they weren’t extravagantly decked out fully as it was a late hour of the night. The elder wore the characteristic leaf-cloak over his folded, somewhat withered wings.
When they were all seated across from me, one of the nobles leaned forward and clasped his hands on the table. “Young Master Leafwing. I assume you must have a very good reason for this incredibly late call.” It was Lord Cerul, who I knew to be one of the most influential nobles and a shoe-in for the elder council in forty or fifty years.
“Indeed, I’m very interested to know what such an upstanding young patrolsprite like yourself has discovered,” added Lord Scar, a bulky sprite who was in charge of organizing the defense of the village should the need arise.
I nodded. “Yes, sirs. I have discovered something new to this forest, this very night.”
The third noble, Lord Cadmi, smirked. “Yes, the midnight jaunts of you and your friends are well-known, Leafwing. It’s almost as if you’re our nighttime patrol, if unofficially.” I smiled faintly, with a nervous chuckle. We had technically broken the rules, and I was grateful that I wasn’t being scolded for it.
“Please, what have you discovered?” Lord Cerul asked patiently. They all seemed rather keenly interested in what I’d have to say. This surprised me somewhat.
I took a deep breath before answering. I started by giving a short explanation of where I’d been right up until the discovery, noting the presence of the owl as the real cause. Then, “So, after I got away from the owl, I found this temporary nest of sorts, by new creatures in the forest. They had a cloth building, they played with fire, and they were about six feet tall!” I finished excitedly.
The nobles were very cautiously listening to my story, and, with trepidation I realized that they weren’t very inclined to believe me. The elder still sat motionless in his seat, his wrinkled face betraying none of his thoughts on the matter.
“Really, boy, six feet? What were these creatures like, tell us more.” Lord Scar insisted.
So, I delved into a more detailed description of the giants I’d seen. I noted that they were very like sprites except for their lack of wings and odd hair colors. I tried to describe the best I could everything I could remember from what I’d seen while there, so close. When I’d finished, I waited anxiously for any reply.
Lord Cerul was the first to answer. “Well, Leafwing, this does sound like a rather interesting discovery. You’re sure of what you saw?” I nodded. He sighed. “Understand that it’s really very hard to believe this. Nothing of the sort has ever been recorded, after all.”
“That’s right,” Lord Cadmi interjected. “Perhaps this was one late night flight too many and the lack of sleep fuzzled up your brain.” He smiled good-naturedly enough, even though it sounded very much like he was calling me an idiot. I couldn’t smile back.
“What should I say to prove it?” I answered. “I know what I saw.”
“I don’t think the boy is lying.” We all turned to the elder, who’d spoken (finally). “First of all, Young Master Leafwing has no reason to make up such a huge lie.” The nobles paused, then nodded in admittance to that, with Lord Scar muttering his agreement. “In fact,” the elder continued, “judging by the state he’s in it looks like he hurried straight here.” When they glanced back at me, I nodded in confirmation of that. The elder smiled, his pine-green eyes twinkling. “I know that, when I was young and my wings were still strong, I’d never think of cutting my flights short just to play an elaborate prank on the nobles at the time.”
Lord Cerul smiled and chuckled. “True, true.”
The elder continued, more seriously though, “Furthermore, there actually is a record of such beasts. To the questioning looks from the nobles (and, admittedly, myself), he just smiled and raised a hand to tap the side of his head lightly. “Here. It was decided after the last appearance that the written record wouldn’t carry any information on these giant creatures, which are really as big as Young Bowman says they are.”
Lord Scar whistled. “So what are they? Are they dangerous?” ~~~~~ (c) Neon
Well? WELL?! Are they dangerous?! You probably know what he'll say. ;>>
Just a dialogue chapter, I know, sorry!
Also, mad, mad props to whoever can guess where the nobles' names come from (I didn't get them from a book or anything, if those names appear in a book it's by coincidence), as it's an obvious yet subtle pattern.

(Dude. Amayasama. You are a good guesser. But then, it's not as though I wasn't setting up for something like that ... ;>> )
Chapter Eight
The elder nodded gravely. “Very, I’m afraid. They’re called humans,” he looked straight at me next. “You’re quite lucky they didn’t catch you, young one. Humans are cruel beings by nature. In years long before even the elders of my youth were born, humans knew about the existence of sprites. They were known for being rather violent towards us. They’d catch sprites, and when they didn’t cook them for food they put them in cages and sometimes tore at their wings,” he explained darkly. I and the nobles all visibly winced at the description. I felt my stomach tighten—I’d been within mere feet of these monsters!
Lord Cadmi shook his head slowly. “This can be no good. Are you sure the creatures the boy described are these ‘humans’ you speak of?”
The elder nodded. “Yes. Humans are supposed to be like giant wingless sprites, essentially, though they have no sway over any element, thank the stars.”
Lord Cerul nodded. “Alright, then. So it would seem, according to Bowman’s report, that we have highly dangerous visitors in our forest.” Everyone paid him rapt attention then, even the elder. “How far away did they make their temporary nest, Bowman?” he asked me.
“A bit more than three miles,” I answered. “And I think they said they would only be here for a week or two. From the sounds of things they plan to migrate somewhere else, not so deep in the forest perhaps.”
The others seemed relieved by this revelation. Lord Cerul paused for a brief moment, then seemed to decide something. “Right. I choose to believe Master Leafwing’s report and intend to take precautions accordingly.”
“I agree,” Lord Scar added. “We’ll have to send messengers all throughout the village first thing tomorrow. The other two Lords nodded in agreement.
Lord Cerul then smiled faintly at me. “No more nighttime patrols, though, Bowman. We need everyone to stay near the village.” I nodded; it was tough to argue with that, especially after hearing the elder’s description of the humans. Lord Cerul continued, “We’ll have to up the guard duty on the stream, and make sure all the other patrolsprites know to keep closer to home than normal.”
The elder spoke up again. “It is imperative that people know that humans are crafty creatures. No one must try to see them, for any reason. If someone were caught, we could certainly expect never to see them again.”
“Yes. People will know,” Lord Scar assured him.
Lord Cerul then stood up. “We shall need to wake the other nobles to help plan this. However, I think Young Master Bowman has earned the right to a good night’s sleep. I will meet you all in the upper conference room, if you please.” The other two nobles and the elder got to their feet. I stood too, as formality dictated. The three of them left the room swiftly, the elder’s cloak sweeping across the floor, leaving myself and Lord Cerul in the room.
“Come, Bowman, I shall walk with you to the door,” Lord Cerul said kindly as he rounded the table. I nodded, realizing now how tired I was. All that flying away from owls and humans had worn me out. We exited the room, leaving its moonflower-glow behind for the much darker hallways.
“I almost can’t believe it, your Lordship ... they really were massive creatures, those humans.” I said in a somewhat hushed tone, induced both by my awe and in response to being out in the open, echoing hallway.
Lord Cerul nodded as we walked along, thinking. “Yes ... though I do have a feeling they might not be as dangerous as the elder said.”
I raised my eyebrows at that. “Really, sir? I heard them—they plan to eat animals. That sounds pretty dangerous, doesn’t it?”
He had winced at that. “Yes, it does sound dangerous. But, we respect the wolf and the owl for their ways of life ... as much as that means we must also avoid such creatures.”
I paused, reflecting on that. “So, what are you saying, then, your Lordship?”
Lord Cerul smiled faintly. “I was just entertaining a possibility. From what you said, these creatures are at least capable of coherent speech. With that in mind it’s most likely that they have at least basic intelligence, probably more.”
“You think they could be reasoned with,” I said incredulously.
“Perhaps, perhaps not. I still think they are a very real threat to us—but I don’t think they are quite so deadly a predator as the elder said.” Lord Cerul sighed. “What I need is a better glimpse to know more.” We stopped in the hallway as he just looked at me.
I blinked, then shook my head. “With all due respect, your Lordship, I don’t think a second sighting is necessary. I think we should all just lay low and wait until these humans migrate somewhere else and have done with it.”
Lord Cerul smiled and nodded. “I respect your opinion, young Bowman, seeing as you are probably the first sprite in this forest to see a human in almost a century. But, I am going to say this, in case you change your mind. I personally give you permission to travel out from the village to glean a second report if you wish to do so. You will be the only one this privilege will be extended to, I’m sure, after the nobles have all had their say.” A pause. “I understand completely if you do not wish to; these are threatening beasts, I know, but it would be nice to know exactly how threatening, yes?”
I shrugged. “I guess. Sounds to me like you’re just curious, your Lordship,” I joked, cracking a small grin.
Lord Cerul chuckled at that. “That I cannot deny. Now, you go home and think about it for a while. It’s best that no one linger outside any longer this night.” He said, patting my shoulder. I nodded and turned for the door. I pulled it open and, before exiting, sent him a backward glance. Then, I was out the door and onto the branch. Bidding the guard farewell, I jumped into flight once again and made my way home through the scantly-moonlit village. ~~~~~ (c) Neon
Humans are referred to with words more associated with animals (migrate, nest, etc.). Just thought I'd point that out to give a sense of perspective--sprites believe (much like humans believe) that they are the dominant species in intelligence. Who knows if they actually are? XD
But yes, according to Mr. elder there, the humans are highly dangerous. I'd believe him if I were a sprite. ._.; But there's the answer to Scar's question. (Scar: Bah. I could fight one. Bowman: There were three of them. Scar: This calls for some epic strategic maneuvers <<; )
Cerul the wise. He's the kind that I could easily see spending hours on end in a library.
(Pronunciations: Cerul- SEH-rool Cadmi- KAD-mee)
