Roman felt his heart break at the fae’s obvious distress…and when he saw her tears he did just what any male does when a female starts to cry. He panicked. This line was perfect! I like how smoothly this is going. Keep at it! Hahaha...thank you! ^__^ I find male's reactions funny when girls start to lose it...though, part of me feels bad for them too...>_> Poor dudes...-___-

Now frustrated at breaking down in front of a stranger and a potential enemy, Mae started trying to rub her tears away. "I...Im not crying....oh gods...its just been so hard....and I have to find something to help..." The poor young fae was completely falling apart. After having to watch many people she knew fall under the power of the virus and then having to go into a city teeming of giant races that she couldn’t turn to...Mae was beyond stressed and the scare of being found by a giant was the scroll that broke the fae's wing. She wanted someone to help her but she couldn’t let herself trust him. Looking up, her tear filled eyes glared at him. “And how could you help me?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Roman leaned back a little, surprised by the ferocity in the little fae's eyes. "I...I don't know. But I could at least try, right? You said you needed something to help...are you in trouble?" He softened his tone and gave the girl a gentle look, "Please...I'm just as freaked out as you are...faeries aren't supposed to exist anymore...so, I wasn't exactly planning on meeting one today." He attempted a weak smile.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mae was taken aback the elf’s sincerity. Her glare faded and she tilted her head as she considered the handsome, but frighteningly huge face directly across from her. “You would really help me?..I don’t know if I should trust you with,” she paused to consider her words, “…with my mission.” Sighing she looked away and considered the hundreds of books and scrolls in the room. “Though I don’t know if I should turn down your offer either.” Mae looked back at the elf with a determined look. “You swear on your life that youll actually help me? And not....take advantage of the information that I give you…” Her serious tone fell into a slightly more ironic but still slightly frightened one,”..or me for that matter?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Roman’s ears tilted back with a look of near hurt. Did she think that’s what he was doing this for? For some kind of profit or to take advantage of her? “Gods, no…I swear it.” He scrawled out the six pointed star of the ancients over his heart in an oath. “Promise…I really do want to help.” He pondered the tiny creature…she was terrified of him…and he had to admit, there was a small part of him that was a little frightened of her. It was only natural to be leery of the unknown…forget the fact that she was the size of his finger…history books described the fae as being one of the most powerful races ever to have dwelled within the realms the gods had created for the earthdwellers. But then again, those same history books also depicted faeries as being soft-spoken, timid little beings who dressed in flower petals. And this faerie certainly did not fit that description. He shook himself from his thoughts and looked down at her again… “But, you have to tell me what it is you need help with…”
The small fae smiled softly. The star oath was even still known among her people and only used when you truly meant what you were saying. Mae could remember using it herself when her parents made her promise not to use the advanced spells she knew against a bully ever agian. Though Mae had been punished, the bully’s eyebrows didn’t grow back for a month. ‘The next time I used it was over the sleeping form of my parents.’ Wiping away another stray tear, Mae smiled a little bigger at him and looked to the side of her. The giant’s thumb was right next to her. She reached out her hand and laid it over the top of his thumb. ‘Gods…my hand is only about as big as his fingernail.’ Mae looked back up at him with a smile and a little bit of wonder again. “Thanks…I really appreciate it.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The feel of the faerie’s hand pressed against the tip of his thumb sent an almost electrical jolt through his hand…the skin where she touched even seemed to tingle slightly.
He wondered if this could possibly be the effects of her magic aura…or maybe he was just imagining it.
“Er…sure. No problem. But…what exactly is it that you need help with?” He rested his elbows on the table, still carefully cradling her in the palm of his right hand. “Oh and…you can call me Roman by the way…” He gave a small smile, “Sorry, forgot to introduce myself earlier.”
----------------------------------------------------
When the giant, ‘no…Roman..,’ she thought with a smile, rearranged his arms on the table, Mae again had the realization that she was still sitting in the hands of a giant sweep through her. ‘This has to be the weirdest thing ever…cant say that its entirely..uncomfortable now,’ she thought. She also wondered if it was a bad thing. ‘No, I really think that I can trust him.’ So she scooted back to lean against his fingers, and try to get a little more comfortable. “Oh..well it was an…interesting way to meet someone,” the small girl offered to lighten the mood. “My name is Mae.”
Then with a big, sad sigh, Mae told Roman about the ancient trees and the virus that had spread throughout her people. She was able to keep herself from crying as she related how her people were all falling victim and how she was hoping to find a clue on what the virus was here in one of the old texts. And maybe even find a way to stop it. Looking back up into Romans face, Mae gave him a sad ironic laugh, “So all Im basically looking for is something that can save hundreds of lives.”
-------------------------------------------------------------
Roman gave a weak chuckle…”Really? You’re being totally serious?”
He was glad that he was already sitting down because he was starting to feel lightheaded. An entire race in danger…and here he had just volunteered himself to help save them.
Hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands of lives now rested upon his shoulders…because there was no way he was going back on a star oath.
He took several deep breathes before looking at Mae with a focused and determined expression. “Okay…you said you were looking for a book? Let’s start looking…” He pushed his chair back and abruptly stood up…before remembering to move slowly for the fae’s sake.
Mae gave an empathetic chuckle. She defiantly knew how he was feeling, though she had slowly gotten there herself. Completely leaning back against one of his thick fingers and looking up, Mae was about to voice her thoughts when Roman abruptly stood up. With a rather girly and frightened yell, Mae was thrown to the side and fell between his open fingers as gravity pushed against her.
Throwing out an arm she was able to just catch herself before sliding through them, but the fae girl was still overbalanced because of her large wings. “ROMAN GODS DAMN! Help me you idiot!,” she screamed at him. Mae’s wings twitched with her desire to fly, but her right wing quickly stopped moving. The muscles were strained and bruised too severely to use at all. Again pain flashed through her back as the muscles cried against her use of them and Mae’s arms twitched when it reached them. Starting to black out, the small girl’s arms gave out completely and she fell faster.
------------------------------------------------------------
At once, Roman cursed his stupidity, grabbing for the fae clutching his fingers with his free hand, only just barely managing to catch her before she fell too far. At least his elvin nature gifted him with amazing reflexes.
“Sorry! Sorry sorry sorry…” He stammered over and over, gently easing the fae further onto his hand from where she hung halfway off his palm. “I’m sorry.” He apologized one final time before quietly awaiting her response.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Roman’s apology helped Mae focus and fight back the blackness creeping over her vision. When his huge fingers touched her tender back, it completely receded as more pain shoot through her system. ‘Oh gods…..I think that I might be better off doing this alone and not stuck with some careless giant.’
Again, Mae looked up into his face with a glare and was going to tell him to just leave her alone. But Roman’s face looked so sincerely apologetic and embarrassed, that she relented. With a sigh her glare faded into a very miffed look. “Gods Roman…just…please be careful.” She paused and had a sad look on her face. “I really cant to this alone now…..” With another sigh she shook her head and looked back up at him. “So you really don’t know any healing spells?”
“I’m sorry,” Roman carefully cupped his hands together to provide a safer seat for her, “I’ll be more careful, I promise.” His pale face turned a light shade of pink when she asked him the question about healing spells. “N-no…I really don’t…but I do know a little bit about non magical healing.”
--------------------------------------------------
When Roman’s hands cradled her, Mae was surprised to be more comfortable and feel safer. ‘Oi, this has really gotten weird.’ She almost smiled when a slight blush tinged his cheeks, but she was somewhat confused by his statement. “What do you mean nonmagical? Do mean icing? Id rather not take the time to go find it if you do,” Mae let her sentence trail off into a question. “Cause I really need to start looking through the history texts as soon possible.”
----------------------------------------------------
“I don’t have time to tend to your wounds right now anyway…the library closes in ten minutes.” Roman cursed under his breath before turning to the row of shelves containing the history books, being careful not to jostle Mae while he walked. “Er…what’s the name of the book?” He asked while he looked over several shelves…
----------------------------------------------------
Now blushing herself, Mae stammered out the main problem of her plan. “Well…I….…really don’t even know……that is too say…” Looking away from the bewildering giant sized books, the small fae looked up at Roman almost pleadingly. “I really don’t know what Im exactly looking for! I was going to start with the oldest texts and look for anything dealing with the time when our races split…..the virus doenst seem natural and is possibly something leftover from the wars…or look and see if any of the texts mention fae at all!...it was so long ago….” Mae realized that she was rambling and abruptly stopped. “Oi…well……..you see what I mean.”
Roman's brows knit together in a worried frown, "You don’t even know the book you’re looking for?” He groaned, “This isn’t good.”
He nearly jumped when the same elderly human librarian poked her head into the room, “Five minutes until closing time.” She informed him before ducking back out.
Roman sighed, glad that his body had been turned away from the woman so she couldn’t see the tiny figure cupped in his hands.
“Oh gods, she scared me…” He looked down at Mae, “Er…I don’t think we’ll have time to find your book tonight.” He looked away for a moment with an awkward expression before returning his brown eyes to her. “Would you be willing to come home with me? I’ll see to your wounds and you can stay at my place for the night and I can bring you back here first thing in the morning and we can look for your book.”
-----------------------------------------
Still blushing, Mae looked away when he restated her problem. She was about to suggest that he leaver her there overnight so that she could search, when Roman’s hands twitched. Mae yelped but caught herself before she gracelessly fell over. ‘Gods! What did we just go over!’ She was ready to yell at him again, when another voice spoke. Her eyes widened when a giantess’ voice spoke to Roman. Thankfully his body covered hers, but she still instinctively huddled to the other side of Roman’s hands.
When the giantess walked away, Mae uncurled and looked up at him with relief. She was about to agree with him and say her suggestion when Roman offered his. Again the fae’s eyes widened. His idea did sound logical, but not only was she uncomfortable staying with a stranger, she would be staying with a giant male elf! “Oh…Roman…I don’t know if I feel okay with that.” She nervously twitched her wings and automatically regretted it. “OW!....oh gods……well…I guess that I have to though.” Mae smiled at the giant. “Thanks though for helping.”
--------------------------------------------------
Roman’s face darkened when he saw her discomfort at his suggestion, “Er…i-if you’re not comfortable with it, I can figure something else out.” He quickly added. “I just thought that it would be best, that way we could tend to your wing as soon as possible…”
----------------------------------------------------
Flinching a little, Mae felt a little guilty at questioning the elf’s motives. In the few minutes she had known him, he had been nicer to her than many fae she had known. She looked up at Roman with a small ironic smile and shrugged her shoulders somewhat sadly. “Not only have I not had the greatest couple of weeks, but its…natural I guess to be wary of strangers…,” she then gave an ironic snort, “and then the stranger is a someone from one of the giant races Ive been taught to avoid at all costs.” Again, Mae reached out and put her hand on his thumb. “But I really do appreciate your help Roman. And I would especially appreciate a real bed to sleep in and help with my wing muscles.”
Roman flinched just barely as the tingling sensation washed through his hand and up his arm again at the faerie’s touch. He blushed, hoping he wasn’t too obvious about how her touch affected him. It had to be the magic….but she must be one hell of a mage if her aura affected him that strongly. Usually elves didn’t react to other races’ magic auras…but maybe faeries were different. “Are you sure you’ll be alright with it?” He asked, lifting Mae up closer to his face, trying to read her expression to tell if she was speaking the truth. Several of the main lights in the library flickered out, signaling official closing time. “Crap, we’re out of time.” Roman scrambled for ideas of what to do, “Er…I…can’t really just walk out with you in my hands. People will flip if they see a faerie…” He looked down at himself, “Er…would you mind riding in my pocket?” He held open the big spacious pouch of his hoodie. “Or you can sit in my hood…” He motioned to the thick folds of fabric draped around his shoulders.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mae thought that she saw an uncomfortable look pass across Roman’s features. But if there was it quickly passed and she saw again a look of worry as she was raised in front of his face. “No Im okay with it Roman…I-,” she was cut off by the lights turning off. She looked up in frustration at them as Roman made his suggestion. “Er..huh?,” Romans question finally sunk in and Mae again blanched at the options. “Oi…well this is going to be interesting.” She took a moment to consider and sighed. “Well, I guess in your hood…Id much rather NOT have to travel in a pocket,” Mae shivered at the thought. “But would you be wearing your hood and have me on..your shoulder……or did you want me to just…sit in it?” ‘Gods..I cant believe that I'm asking someone this.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I’ll wear it up…it’ll hide you better, I think.” Roman thought aloud. “But you’ll have to stay further back and rather close to me.” He added as he used his free hand to gather up his belongings and stuff them in his messenger bag. “You ready?” He carefully lifted his hand up, holding it level with his shoulder and waiting patiently for her to climb on.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As Roman talked, Mae nodded in agreement. “That’s fine with me…id much rather not be in a jacket pocket.” When the giant continued moving, Mae grabbed onto his thumb to steady herself against his movement, though she had to admit that the elf was moving much more carefully than before. Just as Roman raised his hand to his shoulder and asked if she was ready, Mae paused, again flinching at the situation she now found herself. But she also ironically remembered something. “OI! Oh damn…..Roman,” the fae looked at the giant face that was only inches from herself with a rather sheepish and alarmed expression. “When you pulled the books off me……did you grab my bag?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ronan paused, bringing Mae away from his shoulder again and looking at her with a puzzled expression, “Your bag? Uh, no…” He curled his fingers slightly and cupped his palm before walking back to where he’d found Mae, crouching down and looking around the remaining scrolls that still littered the floor. “Eeeeeeehhhhhh…I’m not seeing any bags.” He frowned and got down on his knees, carefully holding Mae out on a steady level hand while he leaned down to look under the shelves… “Ah! Found it…” He reached under the unit and felt his fingers brush against a tiny piece of fabric. Unsure of the contents, he delicately pinched the satchel between his thumb and finger, not wanting to accidentally crush something inside, before withdrawing his arm, “This it?” He grinned as he sat up and held the bag out to the faerie.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mae kept her hands on Roman’s finger as he moved and crouched down to look for her bag. Letting go, she moved to the edge of the hand to help him look. Almost immediately though, she was slightly thrown backwards when he changed his stance. But a moment later, Mae’s face lit up when Roman carefully pulled out her bag. A large grateful smile crossed her face and she took her bag from his fingers. Mae turned her smile to up towards the elf’s face. Looking up at Roman’s proud grin made her relax a bit more. Fae were always taught and warned against making themselves known to any of the larger races. And harsh penalties would be set against any that had a hand in giving too much information away. But since she had met Roman, he had adequately made any assumption she had about giants seem much less certain. Again the thought that he seemed to be overall much more likable than most other guys she knew, crossed Mae’s mind. And those boys were much closer to her height. ‘He really is a nice guy isn’t he?’ Quickly storing her thoughts away for later, Mae clutched her bag to her chest. “Thanks again Roman. I seriously don’t know what I would do with out my change of clothes, books, and other stuff. I guess we can go now before we get locked in.”

Roman straightened, smiling kindly at the faerie sitting in his palm. Her slight weight felt a little strange, but she fit perfectly into the hollow of his hand, so well he could hardly even feel her there save for when she moved around.
“I’m glad you thought of it before we left.” He carefully lifted her to his shoulder for a second time, waiting patiently for her to settle herself. “I’d hate for you to be without the things you need. Especially considering the fact that I don’t exactly have anything sized for faeries.”
--------------------------------------------
“Oi..yah, when I started out I didn’t think how long it would take to get here,” Mae chuckled sheepishly, “I actually probably need to do wash some stuff. But id have gone crazy without my reading books. I would have been so bored on the way here and all I would have been able to think about was…..home.” with her last word, the small fae stopped rambling and looked down at her lap sadly.
By now though Roman had placed his hand by his shoulder. Steeling herself against her memories and against any remaining worry about having to sit on a giant’s shoulder, Mae climbed onto Roman’s shoulder. She tried to be as graceful as she could, but it was hard when the fae girl couldn’t fly or even use her wings to balance herself. Hesitantly reaching out, Mae put her hand on the giant neck and used it to steady herself. Again, the odd sensation of feeling the texture of a giant’s skin under her hand traveled up her arm. but she still moved on till she was standing on his shoulder and then carefully sat down. Turning her head and looking up, the slightly uncomfortable girl tried to see as much of the elf’s face as she could. “Don’t worry too much about trying to hide me. Just put your hood up and Ill use my invisibility shield.”
---------------------------------------
Roman resisted the urge to flinch as the tingling sensation traveled though his neck, telling him that the faerie was touching his skin again.
He mentally shook of the sensation, trying to take his mind off of it as he carefully lifted his hood, not wanting to smother Mae or accidentally knock her off his shoulder.
“Are you sure you’ll be able to right now?” He hissed through the side of his mouth as he slung his bag over his shoulder, “I don’t know if casting any spells is a good idea right now, Mae…not with the state you’re in.”
---------------------------------------------
When the elf’s hood started to slide over his head, she pressed herself into his neck so that she wouldn’t be knocked off. Though as she watched, Mae noticed that it was almost unnecessary because Roman was being very careful while he pulled it around them both. Again noticing at how cautious Roman was acting, the fae felt even more relieved at trusting him. And his worry about her health helped even more. Making herself comfortable she leaned against his neck more comfortably. “Ill be ok Roman. Im tired and in some pain, but Ive been doing magic for awhile and Ill be able to hold onto a shield long enough. I may just drop it when we’re outside depending on how dark it is.”

Roman smiled gently at the feeling of the tiny body huddled against his neck…it tickled slightly and the tingling sensation still remained…
“Are you sure?” He sighed as he stepped out of the side room and made his way to the library entrance… “Well….if you’re sure that you can handle a spell…go ahead.”
He rolled his shoulders just slightly, not wanting to disturb Mae…but he couldn’t help himself…having a faerie sitting on your shoulder makes one more conscious about your shoulders and neck…
He pushed the doors open and stepped outside, enjoying the cooler evening air on his skin…
----------------------------
As Roman stepped out of the room, Mae instantly cast the spell for an invisibility shield. By reflecting and merging with the shadow in the hood, the shield was able to adequately hide the small fae from the sight of anyone looking at Roman. Smirking a little, the fae knew that any magical aura from her spell would be hidden by the reflective nature of the spell.
Immediately feeling more comfortable now that she was hidden, Mae tried to enjoy the ride. The feeling of giant shoulder muscles under her moving slightly with the natural rhythm of Roman’s walk, was a odd to the fae. ‘Even if I knew what it was like to ride a horse..this would still feel completely..different.’ The small girl had almost yelped when Roman rolled his shoulders a little, but the movement was minimal and was even a little fun. ‘Oi..that almost made me think of flying.’
Smiling she looked out from the depth’s of the hood watched the giant sized city roll by. Though she had watched the city for almost a day, Mae had done her best to stay away from the street level. The small girl was again mesmerized by the huge size of everything. The fae city had slightly different styles for architecture, but the overall images were the same and the difference between her norm and the one around her was striking. Giant sized stores selling fashions, books, house ware items, instruments, and anything else for customers sized to the stores.
As she continued to watch the storefronts and the items sold, Mae was starting to notice that many of them were either close to or identical to those sold to in fae stores. ‘Wow..I wonder….do they get them from us…or do the fae actually get them from the giant races.’ The ideas and implications began to storm Mae’s brain. Either her people were using and taking some of the ideas from the world around them, or ideas were being out right exchanged. ‘Gods….I wonder if Im not the only fae talking to nonfae people.’
Again storing away her thoughts for later, Mae hoped that they were nearing Roman’s place. Her bruises and scrapes were starting to feel worse as she strained to keep her shield up. Leaning more of her weight against Roman’s neck, she tried to keep awake and not fall.
-----------------------------------------
The young elf smiled softly, feeling the fae curl up tighter against his neck. It made him straighten up and walk with a little more purpose. He couldn’t quite figure it out…it was as if he felt….responsible…for her. Like he had to keep her safe…to protect her. And the strangest thing is that….he wanted to. He wanted to take care of her and make sure no harm ever came to her…
It made him feel all funny and courageous.
He regretted the fact that he didn’t know healing spells…it was embarrassing, actually. And he felt bad, especially since Mae clearly needed medical attention…
He sighed, looking through the corner of his eye at the shoulder the fae was curled up on, even though she was too close to his neck for him to be able to see her. He would just have to try his best with the natural healing remedies he knew.
“How you holding up, Mae?” He whispered softly, unsure if the faerie was even still conscious.
----------------------------------
Hearing Roman’s voice, Mae suddenly became very aware of the fact that she was leaning against a relatively unknown, giant male’s neck, and straightened up.
“Huh? Im…ow!,” when the fae girl had sat up straight, her bruised body twitched with pain again. “Oh gods…I’m alright…kind of.” Sighing, she carefully tilted her head up and looked up at the elf’s face. His profile was slightly obscured by her low angle and some of his dark hair that had fallen over his eye. ‘Oi, have to give the guy credit for having great hair.’ Blushing away her distracting thought, Mae quickly asked her question. “Are we close to your place? Having to maintain my shield is really starting to wear me out more.”
--------------------------------
Roman frowned at the sound of her strained voice, tilting his head just barely, trying to see her, but unable to because of her shield. “Please don’t hurt yourself, Mae…it wouldn’t do for you to make the wound worse because of the spell. “ He reached up and gently pulled his hood further forward so she would be better hidden, “Why don’t you go ahead and release the spell. Just stay as far back and as close to me as you can. I don’t think anyone will be able to see you anyway.” He said quietly through the side of his mouth as he crossed a street and stepped into a modest looking housing district. “We’re almost home so it’ll only be for a few minutes, I promise.”
