Chapter 12 – Broken faith Peter was desperate. He sat down slumped in a large blood-red ears-back chair. In the past two months, his entire world view was destroyed. This fact might had been only half as bad if it had not been destroyed by the people who had built it up for him beforehand. The whole of the last weeks he had been forced to train for something that he refused with every fiber of his body. There had been many others in his training group, who had been very much more relaxed about this whole matter. But unfortunately, Peter was the one whose skills were the most powerful. He wished with all his heart that he would have never been charged with the truth. Living in a lie would be much more comforting and easier to have. Now all he had achieved in his life was completely meaningless. If he were not so terribly loyal, he would have disappeared long ago or would have put an end to his own life. His tired blue eyes stared at the far too decadent furnished office of the chief priest. The floor was covered with several gold-embroidered red carpets and the furniture were all made of precious hard wood. A huge window let in the morning sun, but this could not ignite a spark of joy in Peter. As the heavy oak door to his right opened suddenly, he sat up straight reflexively and turned his gaze on the man who had just entered the room. He was very old and wore a long dark robe of heavy brocade. Despite his age crouching position, he still towered over most men. His face was covered with deep wrinkles which gave him a grim expression, reinforced by his bushy grey eyebrows. With a moderate step, the old man went to Peter, who had now risen from the chair and made a deep bow. "Good morning Master Orphus." Said the younger without looking up again. "Good morning to you too, Brother Peter. You have truly made the punctuality into one of of your virtues. I hope you did not have to wait too long." ,Orphus said and sat down behind his desk. Only now, Peter sat down and looked at the chief priest with an expressionless face. "No, Master. There were only a few minutes." "Good, good, just short enough to not get bored. Because boredom gives birth to heretical ideas.",said the old man with his rough voice. Peter had to pull himself together to not laugh out loud. What he had learned from the leaders of his faith in recent months, was the summit of all heresy. How dared this man to instruct him about that? "I have read in the reports that your training results exceed all expectations. This is of course very gratifying. You will prove to our community a great honor, by providing its survival." Peter unconsciously clenched his fists. Why should he help a community that is completely useless? Why should he give up his life for something useless? "Master, I am sure that my faith will not be enough for the ceremony.", Admitted the young man to consider. Maybe he could still avert the worst. "But Brother Peter, you should know by now, that faith has become obsolete in our community. So this is completely unimportant for the ritual. What is important, are your abilities, and that you fulfill your contract that you signed years ago. ", the chief priest said coldly. Peter said nothing, and sank deeper into the chair. Even if he had signed that contract at that time under very different circumstances, he was nevertheless bound by it. "The community will appreciate your sacrifice very much." ----------------------------------------------- what has this chapter to do with the rest of the story? The answer is: A lot. But for the time being, it's just here to spread confusion

Chapter 13- Freedom of Speech
Sophie woke up when she heard Thomas rumbling through the house. "Oh crap, I'm late!" She heard him curse before he closed the door with a loud bang behind him. Still a little sleepy, she sat up and looked over at the food bowl. There were still the things that he had given her yesterday evening and the water had not been changed. Although she did not have to starve, but fresh food was at least this morning, not on the menu. Sighing, she laid down and tried to sleep again. But since she had been dozing all evening yesterday and had fallen asleep early, she was not tired enough to sleep at once.
After an extensive morning she put on fresh clothes and washed the dirty ones, at least superficially. She wondered, why not the mere fact that she wore clothes came to the attention of the giant. What intelligent animal would be intelligent enough to change clothes every day? Something in this world was obviously wrong, especially for people her size.
----------------------------------
Pato had made himself comfortable on the big black leather chair that stood in the corner of the office. The high armrest protected him from being seen by any giant, who would enter the room. He was here far too long to be nervous in the presence of the big humans, but Twimps were not allowed in the office building. Normally, he did not accompany Sven, whom everyone would call his 'owner', to his job. But today he was a bit out of place at home. Sven's wife Lea had invited some friends to celebrate he upcoming birth of her child with them. Although he had enough places for retreat, but he was not sure if he could endure the noise level today. Here it was, most of the time, quite boring, but Pato tried to enjoy the peace. As soon as Sven returned from his meeting, it would be over anyway. The sun had almost reached its peak and let its rays fall on the dark chair, which heated up pretty quickly. Slowly, it became so hot that Pato could not sit on it any longer, without burning his bottom. "Oh Sven, you idiot, why do you not have let down the blind?" He swore and stood a little awkward on the flexible material. Just at this moment the door opened and a young blond giant entered. After he put the the files, which he had worn under the arm on the desk, and looked over to the chair, where Pato stood and looked utterly distressed. "Everything okay with you, Pat?" He asked with a puzzled voice. "Do I look like, as if everything is OK? Get me down here immediately, or I'll be Twimp-fried egg." Responded the young Twimp and tugged at his gray collar, whose material felt very uncomfortable on his sweaty skin. Sven first did not understand, what his little friend meant, but saw that he was not feeling well. He bent down and picked him up carefully in order to put him down next on the desk to his computer. "Ahh, much better, I was almost cooked." Pato said with relief and ran his fingers through his dark brown hair , which had grown much too long for his taste.. Sven had now sat down on his office chair and looked a little confused back and forth between the little guy and the chair. It took a while before he realized that the furniture stood in the blazing sun. "Oh, I'm really sorry, Pat, I did not know that I would stay away so long, otherwise I would have set you on a shady place." He said with honest affected voice. "Yes, Yes, that's all right. Could not know that the thing would be heating up so much. I did not expect it either ... So, how was your meeting?" Sven had to grin a little. "Oh come on, as if you were really interested in it. Surely you want to see what I've scribbled instead." Pato acted a little as if he was offended. "Oh yeah, just spare me with the whole human-stuff, that would be too much for my tiny Twimp-brain." But Sven had, like almost all his countrymen, no sense of irony. "N-no. I did not mean it like that. I just thought it would be too boring" "Hey, just relax, that was just a joke. Now show me what you've drawn already." Said the little man a little annoyed and went to the file folder in which his big friend assumingly had stored his sketches . Although he has lived with Sven and his wife Lea for almost half a year, he sometimes forgot about idiosyncrasies of the people here.
-----------------------------------------------
The morning was as expected very boring and Sophie spent it with unpacking her backpack and thinking, what to carry with her in her future. They chose her pocket knife, the collapsible cutlery, a few thin rope and a pen to be her constant companions. She carefully tucked everything in her pockets and on the belt she wore around her shorts. Maybe some things would push a bit uncomfortable when she would be picked up, but Sophie was of the opinion that it was worth it.
When she distributed everything in her pockets, She had an Idea. She took the knife out again and opened the blade. Why had she not already thought of that before? With her free hand she pulled the necklace from her throat as far away as possible and began to cut the material with the blade. It was not easy to see whether it did something because she could not twist her eyes enough. Moreover, the very high quality knife slipped several times, as if it would find no halt. After a minute she closed the tool and felt the collar. She could not feel a single scratch. Utterly frustrated, she put the knife back in her pocket. That was really a strange material. It felt like soft plastic, but seemed to be as robust as steel. She began to suspect that perhaps it was this thing that took her voice. But when she was still in the storeroom of the shop, she was able to converse easily with other people. If it was the cause, then it suppressed only talks with Giants, but but could not really imagine how a piece of plastic could do this. Anyway, it was impossible for her to remove the thing by herself, so she would not find out whether it actually had something to do with their speechlessness. Sophie scratched her head thoughtfully and looked up. And she could not believe what she saw there.
---
Tom was now anything but in a good mood. This morning he had to hurry like a mad man, and then this damn lawyer has called and told him that he would probably lose his house. In addition, he remembered that he had fed Maya today. Although he was sure that she still had the remains in their trough, when he had looked yesterday, but he was not sure if it would be enough. So he decided to take a short cut to get home a little earlier . Usually, he avoided this path for several good reasons, but he could not let the little girl starve, right? Just before he entered the residential area, he turned into a small side street. On the one side was flanked by houses and on the other by a small copse. The road was only wide enough for one car and in a very bad condition. He used walk her very often, but that was almost three years ago ... After about three minutes on the forest side a large wooden archway turned up . It was made quite simply from three smooth polished wood beams, and between all the trees it looked quite natural. Behind the gate was a long worn sandy path lined with jasmine bushes, and a sign of also polished wood.. It read: "Monastery of the old souls, Runburg.” Tom stared down the sandy road for a few seconds. He knew he soon would have to visit the monastery, but he could not even bring himself to it. Only seeing that path, his heart gave a lurch. But today he had no time anyway, he had to rush home.
After he had closed his door behind him, he felt so much better. He quickly took off his shoes and jacket and ran into the living room. "Hey Maya, I'm sorry that I was in such a hurry this morning, I'll bring you something to e-." Tom stared at the cage completely dumbfounded. The door was wide open and on the side hung down a thin rope that was knotted at one of the air vents. Incredulous, Tom knelt before the cage and saw that both ,Maya 's sleeping bag, and her backpack had disappeared. "M-Maya? Maya, where are you?" He exclaimed, with evident desperation in his voice. He could not understand how she could come out of the cage. yesterday He had closed the door firmly, right? He lifted the plastic box and took everything off the sideboard, in the hope that she had not managed to get on the floor. But there was no trace of her. How had she managed to get off the high cupboard? And why did she run away anyway? "She could not make it out of the house, right?"

OoOoOo, very interesting! I finally had time to sit down and read one of the stories on here, and I'm glad that I clicked on this one. I'm really interested in finding out exactly why she's unable to speak, Why Tom can't seem to hold onto the idea that she's human, and what Orphus and Peter have to do with the whole thing. :]

Chapter 14 – Mission slightly possible
Sophie still could not believe what she had done in the last few hours. When she saw this morning, that the door to her cage was open, she had a lot of thoughts. At first she thought that she should just ignore it and continue to hope that Thomas would eventually recognized what she was and would treat her as such. But then she remembered how he had treated her yesterday afternoon, and that after they had talked so well. She had really doubted that he would ever understand. Moreover, the impression that she had got in this pet shop, she would not be able to convince any other giant of her humanity.
So Sophie thought that it probably would be better, to search for a way back home on her own. After all, the door which had brought her to this place had been in the open air, and so the exit had to be outside, too. Even if she did not necessarily like the idea of wandering around in this huge world, she had to try it at least. She simply could not cope with the idea to live in a cage for the rest of her life.
But the outbreak had been anything but easy. First she had to climb up to her chamber to get close enough to the cage door. But it still lacked a meter between her hand and the door . She cursed her small size, because even with strong jumps she failed to reach the door. She glanced down and saw her sleeping bag, which brought her to an idea. She quickly climbed back down and rolled up the sleeping utensil to return it into it's shell. Then they threw it to the chamber, and climbed back up. Then she used the sleeping bag as arm extension, and jumped up a few times. She made it, to give the door a shove. Thank God it was plastic and could also be moved by only small forces. After a few more jumps, the door was now completely open. Nervously, she looked at her clock. When Thomas would be coming home at the same time as yesterday, she still had about three hours. Hopefully this would be enough. She pulled her backpack up and threw him outside, so it remained lying on the cage. It was not until she had to consider, how she would get out as well. Then she remembered something . She used her chair as a ladder and managed to pull herself up after a few attempts. As she stood on the cage, she felt an incredible rise of euphoria. She was free, at least in part. Now she still had to find a way to the ground and then out of the house. To get down on the sideboard would be a pretty big problem. All she had with her were very thin ropes that were not designed to carry a man. However, it was the only option. So the girl tied together all the ropes she could find and tied the end to one of the air vents. To reduce weight, she gave her backpack a shove and let it fall onto the furniture. Fortunately there was nothing fragile in it. Then she took a deep breath, grabbed the rope and roped off very slowly. To her delight and astonishment, her construction could carry her and after about a minute she had made it to safe ground. The only thing that she did not like was that she had to leave behind the ropes. For an experienced climber like her, this part had not been too difficult, but now there was a much bigger challenge: the sideboard.. She swung her backpack on her back and moved slowly toward the edge. After her rough estimate, it had to be about fifteen meters. And she had no rope left. How could she make it down now? She just had to get out of here, before Thomas came back. She did not know what he would to to her when he was to catch her. The walls of the furniture were absolutely smooth and offered no support to climb. Sophie's brain worked feverishly. What should she do now? Searching, she ran around on the sideboard on which stood only a few books and an empty vase, so nothing that could help her. When she reached the side that was facing the living room door, she made a very helpful discovery: exactly between the door and cabinet, there was a light switch, the cable was exposed and led almost completely to the floor. The only problem was that there was a certain distance between the cable and cabinet-at least for Sophie. She would have to jump one and a half meter wide to achieve it. And that was not easy if there was such a deep chasm between them. But it seemed to be the only way. Once again, her trusty backpack had to go through a free flight because it would hinder the jump
Sophie tried to calm a little, but in this situation this was anything but easy. It took her a few minutes before she took a great start. To repel from the edge, she to take all her wits, but she made it the first time around. As quickly as she could she threw her arms forward and clung to the cable. She could not believe what she had just done, but was also rather busy to hold on. Bit by bit she had to slide down, but on half she was about to lose the strength in her arms. Tears flooded her eyes. She could not give up now, not just before the goal. So she took it all together to force what she had and managed to arrive on the ground exhausted. Relieved, she slumped back on the light wood floor and remained lying there for several minutes. The hardest part was over, at least she thought they had not to climb down such great heights anymore. When she had calmed down, she looked at her clock. She was surprised that she had only needed forty-five minutes for this whole part of her escape. She would therefore, still have quite a lot of time to find a way out of this house. Slowly, she straightened up and looked at the surroundings. From down here, everything looked much bigger and more confusing to her The other side of the room was sure about two hundred meters away, but luckily she landed not far away from the door, which was unlocked, but wide open. Quickly she shouldered her backpack and went on her way into the hall. There are also had to be the front door. When she entered the corridor, she could see the kitchen, which had no door. And although the place now looked completely different from this angle, it reminded her of yesterday, and this promising conversation ... It made her very sad when she thought of it. But it confirmed her in her plan to escape from the hands of this giant.
She turned her gaze to the right and saw a gigantic door in front of her, whose two milk glass windows let in a soft light. The light of freedom. But unfortunately it was closed tightly, and Sophie could not see any gap through which she would be able to squeeze through. For a moment she thought of the garden door, but was pretty sure that Thomas had closed it yesterday. What should she do then? The girl did not suspect that there were other exits. A little resigned she sank to the ground. That, she would fail her, after coming so far, was rather disappointing. She would never be able to move that door even a millimetre. "Maybe not me, but a giant could ...", she said to herself. That was the solution. She would have to wait until Thomas gets home, and slip outside when he opened the door. However, she had to hold out until then a few hours. But that was probably better than more pointless wandering in the house and looking for another way and waste energy. So she tried to make herself a little comfortable next to the door frame and waited.
And now she sat there and waited for almost four hous. They passed the time with a few songs or remembering a few survival techniques that she had learned earlier. She surely would need them when she would be out there. Then suddenly she could hear loud steps coming closer behind the door She quickly put on her backpack and stood, ready to spurt out. Now she could hear was the door was unlocked by a key high above her. Now, every muscle in her body was tense. The door opened, and the breeze which came in, would have almost thrown her off her feet. She saw Thomas' huge feet entering the house only a few meters before her. Sophie looked up carefully and from this perspective the man looked very scary. Only the creaking of the door, called her back to remember what she was doing. She summoned all her courage and sprinted outside. As the door slammed behind her with a loud roar, she stumbled a little scared, but could prevent a fall. With big eyes she looked at the new environment. She was located on a large two-step staircase that led into a front garden, bordered by hedges. To her left was a driveway, but she could not see a car. It probably also served as the entrance to the property. Behind the hedge towered roofs of other giant houses, so Sophie suggested that she probably was in a kind of residential area. On the one hand, this meant that there was plenty of giants, by whom she could be found, but on the other hand, it meant that there were many gardens in which she could walk around unseen . First of all she had to get down the stairs, and bring as much distance between herself and Thomas's home as possible. This would reduce the likelihood that he would find her all too soon. She hoped that he would seek for her in the house for the time being. So she climbed down the luckily rather low stairs, and ran towards the hedge, to disappear from view. It took almost ten minutes before she reached the redeeming bushes. She had quite a lot of room to move around in it, as the branches and leaves were only impenetrable at the sides, and there was no under wood. When she felt safe, she pulled out her bottle, which she had previously filled with water, and quenched her thirst. Only then she could say that she was really free. No walls that kept her anymore, now she was solely responsible for herself, and no longer dependent on a giant. She now followed the hedge in order to eventually reach the next garden. Until this evening she wanted to bring about two properties behind her,and when she would be under cover of darkness , she would cross the street.
Although Sophie was used to make long quick she was progressing very slowly and poorly. The ground under the hedge was not created to walk on, it was very uneven. When she was about to take a brief pause, she heard a loud rustling behind her, which made her froze. It was followed by a strange scraping and whistling. Gently Sophie looked around and saw a giant blackbird behind her, looking in the soil for worms. Although the Girl Scout knew that her size did not fit into the scheme of prey of the bird, but she felt a certain fear of the large animal that completely ignored her. The girl tried to do the same thing and continued on her way. After nearly an hour she had reached the end of the hedge and looked through the branches and twigs in a different garden, which was not surrounded by bushes, but by a white picket fence. If she would walk along it, she could not be seen from the road, but the giant, who lived in the house, it could discover her very easily. It would be very unwise to take this path to the middle of the day. So she decided to wait for the darkness and then continue her journey. She opened a small camp and strengthened a little with the food that she had taken from the trough before the escape. She also tried, leaning against the trunk of a bush, to sleep a little. She would need all the energy she could get.
The noise of a passing car had made Sophie startle. It was now almost dark now and the girl peered out of the bushes on the road. There were very few lanterns that lit the area, so it would be possible, to come on the other side unseen. However, she could still get hit by a car ... But if it is fairly considered, everything might happen, everything here was a potential danger, and she would have to risk a lot if she wanted to move forward. The girl waited a little until the daylight was completely gone, looked briefly to the left and right, and then fought her way out of the hedge onto the footpath. With brisk steps she went up to the curb, and was extremely nervous. She was now without any protection, and felt almost naked. She quickly overcame the curb and looked once more to the left and right, and jogged off. The faster she was on the other side, the better. As she made it to the middle o0f the road, she felt the ground vibrate beneath her. This had to be a car! As if stung by a tarantula, she made a fast sprint. The vibration became stronger, and suddenly she could see two great lights from the corner of her eye. The fear made her run faster, faster than she ever did. A few seconds later, the huge vehicle rushed past behind her only five meters behind her and its draft pushed her to the ground. Sophie gasped for air like a madman, trying to get up. But the sprint seemed to have demanded everything her. She felt terrible and had to throw up eventually. Only after several minutes she could stand up again and dragged herself to the other curb. Slowly, she doubted her plan. It was too dangerous for someone like her out here. How long would she have to wander around until she had found a way home, if that was possible at all ... Sophie had leaning against the curb exhausted and was lost in doubt, so she did not notice the steps behind her. Only when a huge face looked at her from above, all her thoughts were again devoted to reality. Although it was dark, she could see the face of the giant well, or rather the face of a giantess. She was still quite young, perhaps sixteen or seventeen and wore glasses with oval lenses. Her hair was wild and curly which was held back by a headband. She looked at Sophie with large amber eyes. The Girl Scout did not know what to do. Her head said that she should run away, but her body did not react to it. "Who are you?" Has anyone abandoned you out here? "The giantess asked with an anxious face, but Sophie only responded with a scared look. "Do not worry, Little one. I'll take you to a safe place for the night, and tomorrow we are looking for your owner, huh?" She said soothingly, holding out her hand to pick up the Twimp. But then it made click in Sophie's body and she jumped up and ran. “H-hey, I won't hurt you," said the giant girl and picked Sophie up on her backpack. The little girl struggled like crazy, but those big hands would not let go. Slowly, a large hand closed around her body and lifted her. "Stay calm, you'll soon be safe ." But Sophie understood the word "safe" in a very different way and did not stop struggling. The giantess crossed the road and kept looking down at her. "My brother surely would take you in for a night." ,she said, and went to a house whose front yard was bordered by tall hedges. Thomas' house.
Tom had searched all rooms, removed everything from all the cabinets and looked in all sorts of corners, but Maya was nowhere. He had even put a bowl of food in all the rooms in order to bribe her out from wherever she was. He still could not imagine that she had left the building. Both doors had been locked. By now he was sitting resignedly on the living room carpet, wondering what he could do. When the bell rang at the door, he suddenly started and opened it hastily. He was quite amazed when he saw his little sister Rina, who was grinning broadly at his steps. And before he could say anything, she said: "Hello brother! I'm Sorry that I have come unannounced, but mom surely told you that I would com ... and I have to attack you with something. Out on the road I found something...er ... found someone." Carefully, his sister raised her hand,on in it was a small red headed Twimp. His eyes were wide: "M-Maya? Maya, is that you?"

Oh, she was caught in the act! It's lucky, at least, that she was found by a kind person. It'd be sad if she ended up with someone mean.
I love how you keep your story going along. It's paced just right. =D
