[glow=red,2,200]WARNING[/glow]: This story contains blood and violence. Maybe some death! I don't know details, but it is graphic! Dx
----------------------------------------------------------
"They said to make the greatest weapon! Something that once viewed will install fear! Well, I hope this is what they wanted!" ranted a small man in a oil stained lab coat. He struggled to pull a large electric switch.
"After all," he laughed as the switch was thrown, "the only thing humans fear is humans!" His short brown hair was blown back by the force of an explosion as the electrical current caught in the wire and was repelled back wards upon itself.
"What? What is going on?" he shouted as his weapon activated early. "No! You are supposed to be in hibernation! Shut down! I order you!" The answer came in a threatening tone.
"Negative."
Doctor Hoshino fell onto the tile floor into a puddle of oil and small copper strands as his creation escaped. A blank, bordering insane, grin was plastered on his face and tears rolled down his cheek from his dark brown eyes.
"It's a failure," he muttered staring at the sky from the new "window", "It's a failure. I.... am a failure." The fire alarm went off and the sprinklers came on snapping the doctor from his daze.
"Wait!" he shouted stumbling and slipping towards the window, "You are not ready! Stop! NO!" In a flash, the weapon activated its cloaking device and was gone.
"System check: 89% ..... Power output: 95% ..... Activation Code 768593201 ....... K001 systems online..... scanning area for hostile activity....." flashed repeatedly on the crack computer monitor, but Hoshino took no notice.

"I can't believe that research center just exploded three days ago!"
"I know. I wonder what they were researching."
"I heard it was how to better the picture on x-rays and how to protect people from the stronger radioactivity. Hey, where did Victor go?"
"Victor?" one of the gossiping mom's called out. A sandy haired kid waved from the bush. "Ok! I see you! Just don't wander too far!" She went back to the theories of why the plant blew up with her friend.
Victor snickered to himself. The creek, full of tadpoles and small fish, was just in his sight. A mischievous smile crept up on his face as he inched towards the creek and the promise of adventure. Just as he exited the row of bushes that marked the edges of the park, he tripped and fell over something large and heavy.
"What the...?" he yelped as he rubbed dirt from his freckled face. His watery green eyes saw what looked like a large, silver wire snaking down to the creek.
"It's a wire!" gasped Victor lifting the heavy object in his hands. It looked as if it had been torn in two at one point. It weighed a lot in the small 10 year old's arms.
"I should bring this end back to the owner," Victor stated, "They should know it is broken." He dragged the wire behind him as he followed the trail. He stumbled upon branches and brambles as he got closer to the creek. The closer he got the more confused he became. The wire dipped down the bank of the small creek and looped up the other side. Victor was far enough away that he couldn't hear the laughter of the playground at the park anymore. He also could not see the walking trail that cut across the creek. Victor dropped his end of the heavy wire and used it the slide down into the creek bed.
"Hello?" he tentatively called out, "Is anybody here? I found a wire! But it's broken...." A few cooing birds burst from the underbrush, but other than that silence answered the boy.
"I'm going to leave it here!" he shouted, getting more and more nervous. The silence wasn't right, even he knew that. Just as he began to climb back out, darkness engulfed him.
He screamed and lashed out with a mighty kick, but it hurt him more than whatever had him trapped. The sensation of being lifted struck his normally grounded body. His stomach flipped in fear and he became slightly light-headed by the force of going up too fast. Just as sudden as the darkness had fallen, light pierced his eyes. He looked up and almost screamed.
Cold blue eyes scanned over with with a robotic efficiency, as if trying to ID the young boy. Copper colored hair lay untamed around his face. A barcode glimmered silver on the giant's neck from a gap in the giant's fingers. His fingernails were black and strangely shiny. Victor could hear the faint clicking of gears as the silence dragged on, only broken by the boy's ragged gasps for air.
"What are you?" he squeaked as the strange giant didn't make any move.
"Confirmed. Not a threat. Please repeat?" the giant boomed in a robotic monotone.
"I-I said," Victor gulped, more frightened by seeing the giant's mouth open, "W-What are you?"
"I am K001, a tactical advancement machine." The giant blinked, a whirring sound appeared as he refocused his cold eyes back onto the boy.
"A robot?" Victor breathed.
"Negative. A weapon."
"Are you going to kill me? I'm sorry f-for interrupting, but I f-found this wire. I t-think it is....AH!" He was brought extremely close to the giant's face in one fluid movement. K001 stared the human down, the scanners in his eyes going into overdrive trying to figure out what this boy was and what he meant.
"Kill? What affect will that bring?" The giant showed his first glimmer of emotion as one thinly sculpted brow rose higher than the other.
"My mom will be sad," Victor replied, his trembling easing into a light shiver.
"That does not concern me," the giant bluntly stated, "And you are too young. I don't want your blood on my hands unless you were a threat, which you came up negative."
"So if I had a gun or a knife?"
"Then you would be a threat." The giant looked at the boy in an odd fashion, "Why do you ask?"
"I want to know the difference," the boy laughed nervously, "How big are you?"
"104 ft and 5 inches. How tall are you?" K001 replied.
"I'm 4 ft 7 and proud of it!" the boy exclaimed breaking into a smile at the robot's attempt at being more human, "And how old are you? Where do you live? Do you have many friends? What do you eat, if you don't eat people?"
"I am 3 days and 7 hours old. I don't live anywhere. I don't have any.... friends. And I do not require food," he flashed the boy the black nails on his free hand, "Solar panels keep my system running. I have a larger panel on my back. Answers required from you?"
"I'm Victor Baren....um... I'm 9... I don't have many friends, my sister and my brother live together but not with mom and me and I hang out with them. My brother is a doctor and my sister can;t talk, so he is trying to help her. I like pasta!" He beamed up at the giant, "And I'll be you friend! That is... if you want."
"Victor Baren...age 9.... sister and brother.... pasta.... recorded for future references," K001 repeated with his eyes closed, "Requesting a name from master?" He reopened his eyes and stared at Victor.
"Master? No no! I'm your friend!" Victor gasped, "And you want a name?"
"My system requires a master to oversee my function and growth. You deny that position? If you name me, you are my master," K001 explained, a pained frown on his mouth.
"Oh, so like a teacher right?" Victor exclaimed with a victorious gesture, "Alright! As for a name, I'll call you...." The robot waited calmly for the boy to think of a name.
"I know! I will call you Gear!"
"Name recongnition...confirmed. I am... Gear."

Victor thought for a second then stood on the giant's palm carefully. He walked acrobat-style to where the giant's fingers were and leaned against his curled pointer.
"Do you require something?" Gear asked. Victor nodded, a bright smile on his face.
"Can I get a close look at your eyes? I hear whirring, but I don't see anything moving," Victor asked, his voice drenched in sweet innocence. Gear leaned down, his face close to his hand. Leaning on the bridge on his nose, Victor attempted to peer into Gear's mechanical eyes.
"Please note the sensitive scanners and be careful," rumbled the giant with a blink. The copper colored eyelashes brushed against Victor's bare arms.
"Your hair is sharp?" he yelped as a pink line formed on his pale skin.
"Positive... I think. It is made with thin, molded copper wiring and can sense weather changes, heat, cold, and electric currents," Gear explained. A white human-shaped light had appeared in edge of his left eye. It blinked off as soon as he was done speaking.
"You are so cool!" Victor laughed. Gear tilted his head slightly.
"Cool? Please define," he requested. Victor scratched the back of his head.
"Cool, like... uh... it is like saying you are awesome!" he explained feebly, "You know what awesome is right?"
"I believe so."
"Good. That one is hard to explain!" Victor laughed. Another white light appeared and vanished in Gear's blue eyes.
"That was... laughter?" Gear asked. Victor gasped.
"You can't laugh?" The giant just stared blankly at him. Suddenly, his finger curled around the boy and gently removed him from his face. Gear swiveled his head to the left.
"Audio sensors have picked up your name," he bluntly stated, "A woman is calling for you. Her tone is filled with the human emotion, anger. Orders? Shall I terminate?"
"Mom! Omigosh I forgot about the park!" the boy cried out. He scrambled to free himself from the giant, who only pressed him against his bare chest. Gear's skin was cold Victor noticed.
"Gear!" the boy cried.
"I will carry you to your destination," Gear stated standing. He took one shuddering step in the park's direction.
"No Gear! What if they see you!?" Victor shouted. Gear halted and raised his hand back up to his face. A slightly confused expression rippled on his features before returning blank.
"Then they will be threats! And you were made to kill threats, right?" Victor continued.
"Positive."
"I don't want you to kill! I don't want you to be killed! Gear, let me go please? I will come back tomorrow. I promise," the boy pleaded. Gear frowned and then knelt, allowing the boy to exit his hand.
"I will wait," the robot said standing back upright. Victor nodded, waved goodbye, and took off as fast as he could in the direction he thought he saw the park at from Gear's hand.
He didn't see Gear's attempt to return the gesture. But Victor did notice the three thick cords, including the silver one he attempted to return, still connected to the back of Gear's neck.
"I just made friends," the boy giggled, "with a robot. How cool is that?" But he also wondered how painful it must have been to Gear to have all those wires stuck in him. How damaged was Gear really?
He could hear his name now.

I have seen the Iron Giant. I love that movie. But sadly, very unlike that movie, you will see this story take some very sad turns and I cannot promise anyone a very happy ending to After Dark. Now if only I can bring myself to type the rest of the update. D:

Victor was dragged out of the park by his arm. The boy bit his lip the whole time, not crying out from the pain his mother was inflicting. He did not want the robot thinking she was a threat. Gear was watching him, the scanners in his eyes focused on the boy. Victor knew this. So he gave his shouting mother no resistance as she dragged him to her dark green minivan.
"... and you are going to your brother's house for the weekend instead of Robert's!" she finished starting the engine. Sniffling, Victor stared out to where the creek was. A flash of silver greeted his eyes and then there was nothing. His mother pulled out of the park's parking and drove off.
Not even stopping at home to pick up what Victor needed for the weekend, he had stuff to go to his friend's house, she drove off the highway onto a gravel path. Twenty minutes of worry and boredom had bounced around in the pit of Victor's stomach. The impossibly long driveway came to an end sooner than he thought. The small green painted house loomed before him like a prison sentence. If he was at his brother's he could not keep his promise to Gear. What would the robot do when he didn't show up? Victor chewed his fingernails, his nervous habit.
His brother, Mark, and his sister, Karen, were out in the paddock riding horses. Mark rode up to the minivan as soon as the brakes were pushed.
"Hey mom, what are you doing here so early? Victor was supposed to visit next weekend when uncle comes." After the accident, the family had been split into two different ways. Mark sighed. Victor was the youngest and most effected by the split.
"He ran off. So I'm dropping him off here," his mother bluntly stated after rolling down the window.
"Fine. That's fine. Hey Vic, can you take your stuff to your room? I got to talk with mom for a second," Mark replied less than happy. He loved his little brother, but dropping him off so suddenly was not responsible. Victor grabbed his backpack and lunged from the car. He dashed into the house before the shouting began.
He tossed his backpack at the floor in rage. He fumed silently at his mom. He heard her speed off, leaving nothing but a cloud of dust. Just because Mark was a psychiatrist didn't mean he could make Victor magically stay. Suddenly, the house shook. He heard the horses cry out in fear and Mark calling for Fireball, his gelding, to return to him. Sandy, their collie, went into a barking spree.
Victor looked out his window to see something that made his blood run cold. A giant footprint was imprinted in the tall grass near his window. After a few more shudders, everything returned to its still state.
"Gear?" the boy yelped following the prints with his eyes. They went to the barn, were his brother was taking the horses.
"Gear!" he cried dropping from the open window and running to the barn, mad that the robot followed him somehow.
