With a crash, a few of last night's plates bounced out of the piled sink and onto the floor. The whole house shuddered violently. Mark was thrown from his bed due to the tremors. He cried out with surprise, struggling to untangle himself from the covers.
"What is going on?!" he roared tearing himself free and snatching his cracked glasses from the nightstand. The world came into focus quickly and he saw Victor gripping the doorknob fruitlessly.
"Brother!" the boy yelped slipping to the floor. Fear that his younger brother was hurt, Mark stumbled to the window.
He threw it open with a shout consisting of, "Metal menece! Calm yourself down NOW!" Though his voice was not strong and cracked a bit due to lack of morning care, it stopped the machine almost instantly. He gave Gear's sharp eyes a good glare, knowing that somehow the machine got the just of the expression.
"He has the horses!" Victor gasped pointing to the robot's hands. In each hand was a horse, running though there was no ground to run on anymore. Gear was holding them like ferrets, his hands under their bellys.
"Gah!" Mark choaked, "Bad robot! No! Don't hold them like... Hey! Come back! Where is he taking them! Ugh stupid!" Mark rushed to the door as fast as he could run. Victor, choosing the shorter route, dropped himself from the open window, pushing out the screen with his feet. He gasped lightly as the cold, wet grass brushed against his bare feet. Gear was kneeling near the barn, both horses in hand.
"Gear!" Victor cried out. The massive being turned his head to look at his master. A warm smile crept on his lips.
"What are you doing?" Mark scolded easily catching up, and passing, his younger sibling.
"I am putting away these animals. Miss Karen gave me the idea," Gear replied with a small shrug. Karen let go of his hair with a small wave. She quickly held back on for fear of falling off the giant's huge, rolling shoulder.
"You are frightening them Robo! Here.... place them on the ground and I'll get them!" Mark groaned stopping before the giant, his bare chest heaving and his pale face red. Victor soon caught up, his pajamas unbuttoned. Gear looked at the boy with a questioning gaze.
"Listen to him Gear," Victor urged. Gear place his hands flat and held the horses fast as Mark rushed to grab the rope harnesses tired around the two animal's snouts. He led the struggling animals into the barn. Gear placed a large hand behind them to keep the animals from bolting. His smile was replaced by a frown.
"What is this feeling?" he boomed in a hurt voice, "It is horrible." Karen pet the giant's neck in sympathy.
"It is called sad... I think," Victor explained. Mark overhead their voices and chewed on his bottom lip.
"I... do not like this sad," Gear sighed. The robot did look immensely sad, his eyes sparkling with false tears and his false breath coming in shuddering gasps. Mark latched the stables and made the mounts more comfortable before walking towards the imposing hand that blocked the way out.
"You were trying to help, weren't you?" Victor asked leaning on the finger that was offered, randomly, to him. Gear nodded.
"But Mr. Mark does not want me nor my help, does he?" Gear sniffled. Mark tapped the giant's palm, which immediantly was lifted away.
"I'm sorry," Mark admitted as he walked out of the barn, "I was afraid you were hurting them. They fear things bigger then they are."
"Like you?" The giant's reply caught Mark off guard. He thought about it and sighed bitterly.
"Yes. Like me. But I will attempt to get use to your size and become your friend, ok?" Gear looked down at him with a sheepish smile and a deep nod. Victor hugged his brother, laughing.
"Just no picking me up yet. And watch where you step and how you play with the kids. And when I say hide, you..."
"Hide. I think I can do that. Memory recorded. Stored information compleate. Anything else?" Gear plucked Karen from him and set her down in the wet grass. Mark huffed and turned back to the house.
"You can water the garden and join us for breakfast. Well have it outside. Come on kids, you need to get cleaned up," Mark stated motioning for the children to follow him. Gear stood slowly and saw the large garden behind the house.
"Water the garden," he rumbled walking towards the pond in the woods that backed the ranch. He looked at the ground, careful of where he stepped. He weaved around the small cow herd and to the pond bank. Cupping his hands, he gathered a tiny, to him, bit of water and marched back to the house. He sat near the patio and sprinkled the water on the various plants, humming as he did.
Mark was sweeping the plates as Karen struggled making the eggs. A small giggle escaped her as the nameless tune echoed in the house.
"Maybe you are helping more than any of us know," Mark breathed looking out the window at the giant's bare back. The sun glinted off the three different size and length wires protruding from his spine merrily.
"Weapon my ass!" Mark did not know he was to eat those words.

Gear wiped his wet hands on the rags he called pants and turned back to face the small house. He carressed the roof tenderly, like a loving master would a pet. The word monster played in his head, echoing its curse throughout his being. He took back his hand as if it had been burned and let it fall to the ground.
"Gear?" Victor called out gently, metal chairs clanging free from his small arms, "whoops!" Gear reached over and lifted two of the three chairs.
"Thank you," the boy sheepishly said unfolding the chair he still had. Using his fingers carefully, Gear unfolded the ones in his hands. He set them near the boy's chair.
"Victor! Help me with the table!" Mark called from inside. Victor began walking back to help his brother, but Gear grabbed the back of the boy's pajamas.
"Permit me," he rumbled moving to the side to peer into the house.
"Robo! What are you doing?" Mark scolded as soon as the giant's intruding fingers entered the doorway. Gear found the table's edge and effortlessly lifted his end. With a loud, disgruntled huff, Mark lifted his end and walked out the table with the giant.
"New rule, no house," Mark sighed. He patted the giant's retreating fingers all the same. Gear stared at his hand until the tingle in his sensor from where Mark touched him faded away. He watched the humans set up their breakfast table and sit to eat.
"Does he...?" Mark began to ask when Victor interupted him.
"He eats sunlight. Right?"
"I am solar powered, yes," Gear replied spreading his fingers apart so the solar panels could better catch the sun's rays.
"That is kind of neat," Mark muttered turning back to his eggs. They ate in silece for a while, allowing Gear a moment to charge in peace.
"Are you still broken?" Victor asked after a while. He discarded his fork onto his plate and walked to the deck's banaster.
"My holding chamber's ladder is still in parts, yes," Gear gently answered.
"I can fix that," Mark stated bringing onto him three sets of eyes.
"Will you!" Victor squealed in joy.
"It is not required. Are you sure?" Gear boomed from behind the boy. Mark could have laughed at how modest the giant robot seemed to be.
"Anything for Victor," Mark smoothly replied, "Just let me get my tools from the barn."
"I can carry you."
"No thank you." Mark stood and took his plate back into the kitchen. Both children did the same leaving Gear alone.
"I would like to carry someone. I feel acomplished while doing something," Gear begged the humans, his eye pressed against the door's small window.
Victor and Karen ran out the front door, surprising Gear when they both tugged on the wires protruding from his back. Turning about with a warm yet surprised smile, he gathered them both in his hands and stood carefully. He tenderly stepped over Mark and beat him to the barn.

Gear knelt near the side of the large barn and waited for Mark to catch up on foot. Karen was back in the giant's hair and Victor was swinging a few feet above the ground by Gear's little finger laughing. Gear's eyes glanced at the older and and tracked his movements as he went into the barn for his tool belt. Victor dismounted and followed Mark to help carry stuff outside.
Gear sat back with a low sigh, an odd gesture for a robot. Karen tugged on his hair, the sensors alerting the giant to her touch. He eyes tried to get a good look at her without turning his head.
"Do you have need?" Gear rumbled. Karen made some fidgeting motions that Gear's optical sensors could not pick up.
"I do not understand. Please repeat?" Karen knelt on his shoulder and slowly traced a heart against his skin, the giant's computer easily being able to read the shape. A smile tugged on his lips.
"Robo, can you get down here please?" Mark called out, a belt with a screwdriver, hammer, nails, and other odds and ends hanging from his waist. Victor held a wrench against his chest. Gear's fingers slid effortlessly around Karen's frame. He carefully moved to lay on his stomach.
"Karen can you go feed the horses?" Mark suggested with a nod towards the inside of the barn. Karen pouted and shook her head no. "Please? I don't really want you to see this. Take Vic with you." Victor made a noise of protest holding the wrench tighter to himself.
"It would be best if you were to not see," Gear droned tilting his head to the side, "I do not wish to install fear in you." Karen sighed, nodding as she took Victor's hand in hers. Mark to the wrench from his retreating siblings. With a grim expression he turned to face Gear.
"Now what? I just walk in?" the human huffed slinging the wrench over his shoulder.
"That would be the assumed course of action," Gear agreed. He opened his mouth, unhinging his jaw with a creak to make the opening wider. With a shiver, Mark entered with little hesitation. The quicker he got in the sooner he came out. Gear's tongue had receded against his bottom jaw making a hard surface for Mark to step onto. The muscle was rigid, made of some gel covered in latex. It was just for show, just to help the giant with his vocal patterns. His throat was grooved and had hinges here and there, most likely for the ladder. Mark walked down the hall that was the giant's throat into the room that was his stomach.
The first thing he saw was the encased monitor with code running across the screen. A window showed Mark what Gear was seeing with his eyes. A human figure appear on the screen noting that Mark was inside of Gear. He found the ladder scattered across the room, a red couch overturned on half of it. Cots were screwed to the side of the odd vessel reveling that this room was a safe zone of some sort.
"Have you found your target?" Gear's voice asked from a speaker somewhere in the room. He sounded smaller...more human sized. With another shiver, Mark began to put back the ladder.
It took the man an hour or so to replace the ladder rungs where they belonged, he stepped out of Gear's mouth into the afternoon sun. As he exited he noticed the back of the giant's teeth were nothing but exposed metal while the front had been layered like dentures. Gear's tongue moved under him urging the man outside. Victor rushed past mark to peer inside the giant's mouth before Mark yanked him back. Gear pushed himself upright forcing his jaw shut as soon as the family cleared his personal vicinity.
"All systems normal. Thank you," the giant boomed, his eyes flashing as he checked himself over. Mark shrugged.
"Just don't have me do that again. It was creepy inside of you. Like you are some moving..."
"Fortress. I am a weapon and a fortress," Gear stated with a downcast gaze.
