Chapter 1
Laylie knelt down and held her sister’s head in her hands, “Shhhh.” She held up a finger to her younger sister’s mouth as the girl began to sob. “Everything is going to be alright Anna,” she said hugging her sister tightly. Though she said these words to her sister clearly, she struggled to speak them for she was still unsure if the words escaping her lips were really the truth.
“You really think everything is going to be okay?” Anna said taking a hand and rubbing the tears from her face. Laylie nodded slowly.
Just then their mother came into the room and knelt down next to her two daughters. “Whatever happens do not forget who you are. Do not forget your heritage and your identity. Do not lose hope, and do not lose your faith,” she breathed in a sickly voice.
Laylie’s mother had been ill. Since her father’s shop had run out of business, the family lived off his new minimum wage salary. This was not enough to provide the family with adequate food. Even Laylie felt it as over the past few months she was slowly becoming weaker. No one wanted to hire her father. And it was because of one thing. One thing described by the yellow star that he was forced to wear, one thing that had caused so much hate. They were Jews.
But things were gradually getting worse. Now Nazis were roaming the streets of their town. Anyone who disobeyed would be sent away to camps. But Laylie knew it was only a matter of time until they came for her and her family as well.
Just then there was a knock on the door. Her father bolted in the room and cursed himself. “Hurry,” he said taking Anna into the other room.
Her mother took a piece of the floor and lifted it up. “Get in quickly Laylie,” she gasped.
“Open the door!” a man yelled angrily in German as he pounded again on the door.
“But Mom you have to find a place to hide too,” Laylie breathed.
“No Laylie, there is no room, and if we all hide they will suspect something. You are young and strong, I know you will survive,” her mother whispered and kissed her daughter on the head. Closing the hole in the floor she whispered,” Never lose hope.”
Laylie remained as quiet as she could as she lay curled in a ball with her hands around her knees. All she could do was wait and listen.
An angry Nazi was cursing loudly in German.
Laylie listened to the sound of the door opening. Unable to comprehend what exactly was going on as she did not speak German.
She heard a loud smash, the sound of glass shattering. Her father could understand German; however he could not speak it.
There was yelling and screaming. But not only from her mother, for she soon heard the cries of her sister. They had found Anna.
Laylie closed her eyes tightly. When it was quiet she realized they were gone. Slowly, she crept out of her hole. The house was a mess. The furniture in all the rooms was turned over, glass smashed, cabinets opened.
“Anna?” she called peering into the kitchen where her father had probably hidden her.
When she got no response she realized the full extent of the situation. They were gone, and she was alone. Her house was cold and empty. There was no one to rescue her and no one on her side. Ripping the star from her dress, she burst out of the house, ran into the forest as far as her legs to carry her, not daring to look back.
She ran for what seemed like forever, the icy wind burning her face, until she finally collapsed on the ground, unable to run any longer. There she lay sobbing quietly, alone.
Chapter 2
Laylie coughed and slowly opened her eyes. Her back aching from the hard ground as she sat up. The ground was dusted with a light blanket of snow. She shivered and held her shoulders in her arms. Although she knew there was nothing for her out here in the cold harsh winter forest, there was nothing for her back there either. She felt the urge to keep walking forward as her mother’s words rang in her forehead.
Stumbling across the roots and rocks on the forest floor, Laylie walked for what seemed like forever. The cold stillness of the forest was beginning to take hold over her. As the sun began to set, she settled on the cold ground and fell asleep against a tree.
The next morning Laylie awoke unable to feel her feet and hands. Her whole body felt somewhat numb. She would die soon if she did not find warmth or food and she could not carry on much longer. Fighting still, and the urge to move on, Laylie staggered up and continued deeper into the forest.

Caden sighed as he walked through the cold arid forest. Although he enjoyed the quiet sounds of nature, he couldn’t help but feel lonely sometimes. It was rare that he took walks like these, however there was such a slim chance that anyone would be this far in the forest, especially in this weather.
It was then that something caught his eye. There was what appeared to be a dead animal lying on the ground. Curious as to what exactly it was Caden bent down to get a better look. He gasped. It was a girl. The poor thing didn’t even have a jacket, and was almost as pale as the snow. Slowly sticking his hand under the girl, he lifted her up from the snow. Putting her close to his ear he was astounded to hear her faint breathing. She was still alive.
He knew he had to get this girl warmth soon or she would soon freeze to death. But rescuing the human he would surely blow his cover, there had to be someone looking for her. Alas, he couldn’t let her die. He cupped the girl against his chest to give her warmth and hurried home.
