Chapter 6: Like a Family
Wyatt walked around the kitchen, trying to figure out what to feed a woman from the ancient Middle East. ‘Sense she’s knew to this world I want to get her something sweet... No, something solid first so she can get some strength up, then sweets.’ Wyatt suddenly smiled and gave a relieved sigh, like Violet had said he was terrified that the human girl was going to become the pet of two teenage boys. The thought made him feel like a total monster, but it was hard to see it any other way, until now. ‘I feel like a new dad,’ He thought with a grin as he gathered thing for a sandwich. ‘She’s not going to be our pet, she’s going to be our family.’
Lucas grabbed a hand full of hair when Violet started to sob loudly, he groaned and got up, walking over to her gingerly and knelt down. “Violet, please,” he whispered, laying his fingers gently on her back. The mourning woman suddenly yelled out and turned away from him, he was sure she said ‘no’. Lucas withdrew his hand sadly ‘Asshole, I’m an asshole,’ her sad moaning and his depressing thoughts led to the inevitable, he to started to cry. “Please Violet, I’m begging you, don’t cry, I hate it when people cry. I know you’re hurting right now, but you don’t have to. You were dying Violet, we saved you and now we’ll take care of you, okay? So don’t cry.”
“Are you serious?” Lucas looked up to see Wyatt with a plate of food and a raised brow.
“You know I cry when someone else cries, I should’ve got the food!” Lucas whined
“Well I thought you were going to act like an adult for her while I was away,”
“Shut up!” He yelled, Violet cried out from his frightening, loud voice and covered her head. Both boys gasped and hovered over her closely. Wyatt grabbed the mic and cooed into it.
“It’s okay, It’s okay, don’t be scared Violet,”
“I didn’t mean to shout, I’m sorry, are your ears okay?”
Violet slowly lifted her head, her red teary eyes tugged at the boys’ hearts. Lucas sighed but Wyatt smiled gently “Hungry, Vi? Food?” He placed the plate down and pinched off a bit of the turkey sandwich, crushing the bread so it wouldn’t be too big for her to hold, then offered it to her. She stared at if before taking it and looking it over.
“Eat it Violet,” Wyatt told her, he took a bite out of the full sandwich. Violet paused before also taking a bite, her face squinch up as she started to chew. Wyatt and Lucas laughed “That’s mustard. Mustard.” Wyatt looked at his friend “We need to teach her how to speak English, we can’t learn to speak a language that’s not spoken anymore." Lucas nodded, looked at Violet and pointed at the sandwich “Sandwich,” He said slowly “That’s what you’re eating Violet, it’s a sandwich, sandwich. And this is a apple, apple.”
“Sandwich,” Violet said, “Apple.”
“Yes!” They both cheered at the same time, Wyatt pulled off the bread and pointed at it “Bread,”
“Bread,” Violet said.
They continued through the rest of the sandwich and Wyatt finally grabbed the green apple with a tiny kitchen knife in it, the blade hidden in the apple. He yanked it out and Violet suddenly put her hands up, both Wyatt and Lucas groaned at the woman’s skittish reaction.
“Seriously Violet?” Wyatt mumbled and shook his head disapprovingly. He started to cut the apple while Lucas heaved a sigh and walked to his bed.
“Here Violet, apple,” The burrnette said as he offered a slice to her, she lowered her arms and slowly took it. Wyatt watched her and wondered what he could do to make her stop shaking, he was sure she was freezing, he could barely make out goose bumps.
“Violet,” The girl looked up at the sound of her name, she leaned back when she saw that he was closer than before. “I’m going to pick you up... hold you.” She watched him like a hawk as he placed the knife down and reached for her. She whimpered something but didn’t run for it, she reluctantly let him lift her, she sat in one hand while the other draped around her shoulders and back and was pulled close to his chest. She realized that he was trying to warm her up and didn’t mind the contact then.
“We need to get her some clothes,” Wyatt sighed
“Working on it,” Lucas grunted, Wyatt looked at him and saw that he was actually sewing some white clothe, the same from the white sheet they cut Violet’s blanket from.
“You can sew?” Wyatt asked, holding back a laugh.
“I guess...” Lucas held out a horrible white dress and groaned “...not!” He tossed it aside and began to cut more material, not giving up.
Violet ate until she couldn’t eat anymore and Wyatt introduced her to a red liquid he called juice, which she liked very much. The boy that held her never really moved, he kept her warm and stared at her, which didn’t bother her at all seeing how men stared all the time.
“Finally!” Lucas cheered, he got up and offered her something. Violet stared at it before slowly reaching out and taking it gingerly
“Dress,” Lucas said with a smile, she blinked up at him before looking at it “Okay, I know it sucks, but you gotta work with me here, I’m a guy, I don’t know how to do this!”
Violet pulled it on, grateful that she was no longer naked but slightly peeved at how fat the dress made her look.
“Set her down so I can tie this around her waist,” Lucas instructed, holding out a red ribbon. Wyatt placed her down, she mumbled something when Lucas turned her around and tied the ribbon around her. She turned and smiled “Thank you,”
“Uncle Lucas made you a dress!” Wyatt cooed, teasing Lucas.
“Shut up, and what do you mean ‘uncle’!? She’s older than us!”
“Yeah, but we’re the ones taking care of her. Look at us Luc, she ain’t a pet, we’re a family now!” Lucas blinked before his heavy heart lifted away from the guilt and a grin spread across his face, “We’re like a family!” He cheered, both boys grateful to feel less like scum taking advantage of a helpless girl and more like what they really were, protectors.
