Yuuta sadly watched the horse plummet to its death on the slopes below knowing that if he had been even a second too late, that could have been her. His breathing came in ragged and fearful, his heart pounded hard against his ribs.
"Daichi," Yuuta demanded, "What happened?" Daichi looked up at the giant, trembling.
"She had come to see you master, but I knew not who she was. If I known..." the kitsune stammered, every hair of his tail on end.
"You should still have fetched me, servant!" Yuuta retorted. Daichi squeaked and shut his eyes tightly awaiting punishment. Yuuta's hand shook under him. His clear eyes glimmered with giant tears. With a loud sniff, Yuuta dragged himself back into his cave with the human and the kitsune in tow.
"Daichi," the tengu boomed, "Can you place Saiyuri-chan in my shrine?" The tengu's red hued silver eyes gazed at the kitsune, pleading. Daichi nodded, pulling Saiyuri's limp form into his arms. Yuuta placed his hand onto the deck of the shrine and Daichi lifted Saiyuri off the giant's warm flesh. He balanced himself carefully as he walked off his master and into the spacious shrine. He lay the girl on the elaborate rug covering the red wood floor from view. Ducking respectfully out, the kitsune turned to his master. Yuuta was leaning forward to attempt to peer into the shrine at Saiyuri. His hands were still shaking. His red and gold hair lay across his winged shoulders in a mess from being suddenly woken.
"Does she have the hair pin?" Yuuta sighed, clutching at his heart with his blue nailed hand. Daichi stole a look into the shrine. A glint of precious metal greeted his gaze.
"She does," the fox spirit nodded. Yuuta sighed in relief. He stroked Daichi's back.
"My faithful servent, can I ask you to stand guard once again? I don't want her husband to find her here," Yuuta rumbled. Daichi nodded and scrambled off the sacred shrine. With a loud pop and a puff of crimson smoke, a small rust-colored fox hurried outside. Yuuta watched Daichi go and turned back to the human. He lay down next to the shrine with a sigh, careful not to lay where his mask was looming off his face upon some of the cave rocks thay caused the floor to be rough and uneven. With his features bare, the tengu gazed into the shrine.
"Saiyuri-chan, please wake up soon," the tengu sniffled. A tear streamed down his cheek and his eyes closed. What began as a prayer soon slipped back into sleep.

Something was growling right next to her. She could hear it very clearly. Moaning, Saiyuri slowly opened her eyes to see that she was trapped in a shrine by a golden door. She rose to a sitting position hurting in strange places. Her back hurt the worse. She looked around at the elaborate shrine. Red and gold tones were strewn everywhere and a sharp insence burned nearby. Her sake jar, the one she had given Yuuta, lay in the cornor of the shrine. She gasped as the memories of falling and something huge grabbing her and Daichi rushed back.
Jumping to her feet, she rushed to the gold door. Her hand pushed on nothing but hair. The growling stopped. Whoever she had touch grunted and snorted back another snore. With a howling gale, the giant yawned and peered into the shrine with his red/silver eyes.
"You're awake!" he gasped. She screamed.
"Help me Yuuta!" she shouted. The giant before her adopted a look of deep sorrow and hurt.
"Saiyuri-chan, it is me," he wimpered moving some hair out of his face. When he did not feel the cold bite of his mask, he gasped. A human had just seen his true face. He pulled back from the shrine, but not before Saiyuri had tossed an empty sake bowl at him.
"You are not Yuuta!" she cried out before breaking into a frightened sob. Rubbing where the sake bowl hit, Yuuta shoved two fingers into the shrine. Saiyuri gasped as the azure-nailed digits wrapped around her and drug her out.
"Saiyuri-chan," the tengu boomed. The red star on his forehead gleamed with power. "This is what I really look like." He nodded gently, so as not to scare her further.
She cringed away from him.
"You look so... different and yet the same," she sobbed, "It is almost frightening." Yuuta sighed, and with his free hand pushed the mask to his face.
"Is this better?" he asked, though she did not stop her sobbing.

His eyes get a red tone in them, he teeth become slightly sharper, he has small feathers on either side of his face behind his eyes, his nails become sharper and longer like talons, his ears become longer, and there is a red star in the middle of his forehead. The mask limits his powers so it is easier to deal with humans. Also it helps keep his hair in place.
Good?

The tengu sighed deeply, hurt by the intense fear the human was showing him. He was still the same Yuuta, though his immense power was showing. He bit his lip fighting back the urge to cry himself. He was weak-hearted and had grown to like humans a lot. But the many interactions that had ended in complete disaster began to plague his mind. Was this going to be another horrible ending?
"Master? Is she awake?" Daichi called from the cave's mouth. Yuuta's head shrank against his chest as he nodded. He heard the fox's sharp claws click against the stone as Daichi rushed to his master's side. Taking a flying leap, the small rust toned form soared into the giant tengu's free palm. Saiyuri gasped as the small animal nosed her arm.
"A fox?" she breathed. Daichi's furry muzzle seemed to frown. With a puff of crimson smoke, his human form sat, crouching in Yuuta's hand.
"Kitsune," he grunted. Saiyuri scrambled away from him at first, but soon halted her escape attempt.
"Daichi-san!" she yelped. He nodded and inched forward. With one slender hand, he wiped her face free of the salt burdened tears.
"There is no need to fear. Both Yuuta-dono and I care for you now, Saiyuri-san," the kitsune cooed, "Yuuta-dono trusts you enough to show you his face... I would return his trust." Both of the little beings glanced up at the giant. Daichi bowed his head to his master out of respect, his ears drooping a tiny bit. Yuuta made an attempt to smile, his heart broken.
"I'm sorry," Saiyuri sighed hanging her head, "Please Yuuta-dono! Show me your face again?" Her pleading eyes were enough to fix Yuuta's hurt feelings. He let the mask slip and a hot surge of raw power bubbled up inside him.
Red lightly colored his silver eyes, his teeth sharpened, his nails grew longer, the red in his golden locks flared brighter than before, the feathers of his gold wings stiffened, and the red star in the center of his forehead glowed. On the tips of his enlonged ears and around his eyes red and gold feathered down appeared. He smiled sheepishly, embarrassed by his own image.
Saiyuri's breath caught in her throat. Yuuta was both beautiful and terrible at the same time. Daichi was smiling, his fox-like canines glinting in the meager light. His tail stood on end.
"Please don't fear me," the tengu begged in a voice like thunder, "I am still Yuuta!" Saiyuri nodded and laughed lightly, a strained sound. Yuuta allowed Daichi to remain with him as he stood and crawled back into his elaborate nest of bright silk pillows and embroidered comforters. The smell of spicy cinnamon filled the air. Saiyuri found that Yuuta's feet looked just like a crane's, taloned and scaled, without his cloth boots.
"Tell me more about you, Saiyuri-chan. Please?" the tengu asked gently as he made himself comfortable. Saiyuri sighed and began to tell the tengu what she thought of her husband to be, not knowing he was listening to her echo from the cave's enterence.
Hayato gripped his kanata with white knuckles. He shook with anger. He wife was with this monster! And he was helpless to break the tengu's charm on her. He had climed the slope upon seeing the dead horse, but no body for Saiyuri.
"I'll get her back," he hissed before dashing out. If the monster found him, he would have to fight and he would die. And Hayato liked his life more than anything. Thus he betrayed his lord and lived though a battle, his pride as a samurai dirtied by the disgrace of fleeing. But he lived.
Mounting the borrowed horse as soon as he slid back down the slope, he thundered off back to Saiyuri's home to wait and think.

"...and then I was falling. And you caught me! I wanted to see you so badly! I...don't understand it myself, but you are like a good friend to me!" Saiyuri sniffled. She threw herself on one of the tengu's long fingers, crying hard. Her hot tears dripped across the giant's skin. Daichi hesitantly wrapped his arms around her shoulders. Yuuta leaned close to his hand and breathed gently on Saiyuri. His breath smelled of sweet sake and cherry blossems. Her crying stopped almost immediantly.
"There there. Do not cry Saiyuri-chan. Everything will be all right. You have my word. I will help you. No dry your eyes. That's right," the tengu boomed as Saiyuri tenderly wiped her face in Yuuta's golden sleeve. She left her make-up behind as she looked up to gaze at the golden man.
His eyes seemed so tired. His smile was warm and inviting. Daichi's hands felt good as they helped support her.
"I need to return to sleep, but here, I shall give you a present. Daichi, can you go and fetch Shin?" Yuuta sighed petting Saiyuri's silky hair with his pointer.
"Are you sure? Tou is already out, you do not need Shin?" Daichi asked popping back into his fox form. Yuuta nodded and the fox raced off.
"Shin?" Saiyuri asked in a hoarse voice. The tengu laughed lightly.
"He is a wonderful creature! I am positive you will love him as I have," he assured the human in his hand, "Consider this an apology for scaring you and killing your steed." Saiyuri blankly nodded. Daichi soon returned with the reins to a beatuiful kirin stallion in his mouth. The stallions light silver scales seemed to glow and his cloved gold hooves struck the ground lightly and without noise. His golden branch-like horn curved elegantly at a backwards tilt. His jade eyes sparkled with honor and pride. A light tanned leather saddle was strapped to his back and the reins jingled with bells.
"Yuuta! That is a kirin!" Saiyuri gasped shooting a shocked gaze to the smiling tengu.
"Others will see your old horse," Yuuta assured her, "Shin take care of Saiyuri-chan."
"Yes Yuuta-dono," the kirin replied without moving his lips. The beast nodded.
"Now you can ride up to visit me! Shin will not throw you," Yuuta cheered. With a sweeping motion, Yuuta allowed Saiyuri to slip back on the stone.
"Daichi, go with her. Keep her safe. I have father's bakeneko to watch for my in your place. I trust you," Yuuta commanded. The fox whined but nodded, slipping into the saddlebag. Saiyuri crawled into the saddle and took hold of the reins. She looked back at Yuuta and gasped. The tengu yawned a terrible yawn, air pouring to fill his lungs, his jaws opening wide, and his sharp teeth glinted in the dim light. He curled back up in his nest so that only his wings could be seen. A tabby cat with two tails peeked over the outcropping bringing a growl from the fox. Shin trotted out of the cavern.
"Master sleeps during the day to watch the humans at night," Daichi explained with a flick of his exposed tail, "He must like you a lot for him to wake while the sun is still high." Saiyuri sighed and nodded.
"He is a good friend," she laughed lightly to herself.
"Indeed," the kitsune replied. They rode back to the town in silence only broken by the soft bells.
