===========================
'And here i thought i would be glad to have a summer job,' Mark thought gloomily. Ever since his parents had moved him to the outskirts of San Francisco Mark usually felt as gloomy as the weather. The area was one of the last to fully integrate giants and humans together and Mark hated sticking out so much. 'God..so why am i working at a circus?...thats right..its the only place that can fit 12 and a half foot me.' sighing again, Mark finished his soda.
-----------------------------------------------
Priscilla was an odd person… an outcast...a loner...all of the above...and she enjoyed every minute of it...What possessed her to go to a carnival then? Just to make a statement...A very purple statement.... What exactly that statement was, she wasn't sure, but she relished in the odd looks and stares she got. That was for sure. Yes… Just like her name Priscilla was an odd girl indeed. She stuck out like a sore thumb...
-----------------------------------------------
Leaning back against some hay bales, Mark did his best to hide on his breaks. Pulling out his phone he checked the time. "which is almost over...crap." mark considered being a bad employee and staying there. but no such luck today.
"Hey! Mark! Mister Claversten needs you to take over the Ferris wheel. Old Tim needs a break..." dodging around the hey bales, one of the elephant trainers found mark. the 6foot man was just about eyelevel with mark...who was still sitting. "are you serious? why doesnt someone..."..."there isnt anyone else...its easy..just a couple of levers....go on kid..i gotta go."..and with that the man ran back off.
Cursing, Mark stood up. Being carful, the giant was able to step over the hay bales and start make his way to the Ferris wheel. 'God..why do they have to stare...im just a friggin 18 yr old guy..'..
-----------------------------------------------
Priscilla used one hand to put on her slightly purple-tinted sunglasses and the other to lightly fan herself against the scorching summer heat of San Francisco, as she made her way through the crowd towards the Ferris wheel...which had the lemonade stand right next to it..Priscilla had a weakness for the sweet and tart beverage. 'Ok', she thought with a sigh, 'the stares are starting to get a little annoying now...'
-----------------------------------------------
Mark quickly covered the distance between his hiding spot and the Ferris wheel. For the most part, the crowd parted for the young giant as he tried to casually stroll to his post. 'oh geez..another mother fearfully pulling her kids out of the way of the giant...as if i wouldnt walk around them.'
A sad frown deepened on his face and he consciously reached up to readjust his aviator sunglasses. Mark was actually fond of kids...there was something rather..cute about kids that didnt even come up to his knee. Shaking the girly thought free, Mark made it to the ferris wheel.
Using a cane, Old Tim stiffly stood up. “thanks for coming over Mark. My knees are getting the best of me today.” Though they called him “old”, Tim was a 40 yearold that had arthritic knees from a surfing accident. Mark kneeled down and watched as Tim showed him how to work the ride.
With a goodbye, Time slowly strode away and Mark carefully wedged himself behind the controls. ‘God..at least there aren’t too many people over here…too hot for the ferris wheel….though the lemon aid stand is busy-..wow…that’s some hair.’ With a small grin, Mark tried to nonchalantly watch a girl with purple hair waited for lemon aide on the other side of the ferris wheel.
-----------------------------------------------
Priscilla was irritated to say the least. The line for the lemon-ade stand was ridiculous. Not to mention the bitch that stormed up to the front of the line, complaining about her's not being sweet enough...'Reminds me of my mom,' she thought with a sigh.
After an eternity and a half, she was just about to reach the end of the line when the lemonade-man put out a sign saying "SOLD OUT" ...Not wanting to cuss out right in front of kids, she merely threw her head back, threw her arms in the air and cried, "F-M-L" [fml = lolspeech for fuck my life]
-----------------------------------------------
Mark sympathetically smirked as he watched the human lollipop try not to curse at the lemon aide worker. The drink was excellent, selling it by the gallons all day and the owner of the fiar made sure that they never ran out. ‘So “sold out” actually means “cigarette break..be back in twenty”.’
Shifting to try and stop any leg cramps from setting in, Mark wondered if he should go and tell the purple haired girl that the lemon aide guy would be coming back soon….or maybe sell her some himself. ‘But that would mean standing up and walking over….and I can just imagine what her face would look like then.’ Now frowning, Mark watched to see what she would do.
-----------------------------------------------
Priscilla pouted at the still empty lemonade cart as her once good mood became gradually sourer. 'This bites!' She thought irritably. However, suddenly she had that weird feeling that someone was watching. She looked the left...Nothing but bratty kids and their nagging mothers...To the left...Oh! Look..More snot-nosed midgets...and a giant...who was staring at her...'Oh..What's a giant doing here...Must be a worker her something... but still... Oy… Staring… Not cool…' and with that thought she looked the giant directly in the eyes and glared...waiting for a reaction....
-----------------------------------------------
‘Heh…poor girl…wish I-..wait..is she looking at me?’ Mark moved his head so that his head wasn’t directly turned in her direction, but his sunglass covered eyes were still watching her. The girl continued to glare in his direction. ‘Ah crap…yah she saw me staring..shit….’ Blushing, Mark looked down and pretended to adjust the ferris wheel levers. ‘God…here I was hoping not to draw attention..and I just pissed a chick off…..good job dumbass……………wonder if she’s gone.’ Still keeping his head down, the giant turned his eyes back to the irate girl.
-----------------------------------------------
Priscilla gave a moan as two familiar faces stood out in the crowd...It was her Aunt May and her bratty cousin Miles.....The boy was an only child and was spoiled rotten. The worst part of this whole situation was that they were coming straight towards her. 'This is just friggin peachy,' she thought with a groan.
After the terribly lengthy and horrid meet and greet, Aunt May practically forced Priscilla to watch over Miles while she went some errands...'I hate my life,' groaned Priscilla as Miles whined about wanting to go on the Ferris Wheel over and over and over....
-----------------------------------------------
Mark watched, much more subltly this time, as the angry lollipop talked with what looked like her relatives. But he soon had to put his attention on to the controls of the ferris wheel. The afternoon sun had faded slightly and some people had started to form a line. Mark snorted ironically as he carefully pushed some levers and watched the line of humans that formed parallel to where he sat. ‘Guess that even the giant doesn’t scare them away from the carnival classic.’
Mark watched the large wheel turn a few times and then paused it, letting the riders have a few minutes to enjoy their view. Looking back to the line, the giant was shocked to see the sun glare off the purple tones of the lollipop that he had been watching. ‘Oh crap!..when did she get into line?.....oh geez..and she’s practically right infront of me!....what do I do?’
-----------------------------------------------
Priscilla glared at the staring hoards of people through her purple tinted sunglasses…She was getting sick of the mocking stare… Usually she reveled in being an oddity, but today, it was just getting plain annoying. Running a hand through her bright colored hair, she gave a sigh before looking to the side seeing none other the giant whom was staring at her earlier. Her lips curled back in disgust, before she pointed an accusing finger at him and shouted, “YOOOUU!” Yooouu have a lot of nerve ya know! Staring at me like I’m some sort of FREAK! Like YOU’RE one to talk!!” She ended her spiel with a snort and pushing her sunglasses to the top of her head so the giant could see her piercing midnight blue glare.
-----------------------------------------------
Mouth almost falling slightly open, Mark froze in shock for a second. The girl’s dark eyes held him transfixed as the anger and annoyance from them poured into his. Ironically Mark could almost empathize with her irritation from being stared at….almost. ‘The Lollipop just called me a freak.’
Ignoring her glare and the other curious humans, Mark looked back at the controls and put the ferris wheel back into motion. While turning back to look at the still outraged girl, the giant pulled off his own sunglasses and fixed his dark green eyes on her blue. “Look here Lollipop, I wasn’t staring…I was simply watching. I was even thinking about telling you that the lemon-aide guy was gonna be back in oh..about 5 minutes from now…..but I didn’t cause I had a feeling that you wouldn’t want to talk to the ‘Freak’.” Before he could say anything more, a hand was placed on his shoulder.
Slightly surprised but still scowling, Mark turned around to see that Old Tim had come back. With a small smile and a raised eyebrow, Tim lightly tapped Mark on the leg. “Hey now, how about you go lend the guys setting up more tents in the food area a hand? They could use some help moving everything.” Mark nodded to Tim and carefully stood up. With a sigh, the young giant turned back around and looked down at the purpled haired girl. “I hope you have a good day,” he said dryly before he stalked away.
-----------------------------------------------
~~2 Weeks Later~~
Priscilla sat in the waiting room fidgeting nervously. Of all the days, her stupid cousin [who else but Miles] had to start vomiting everywhere and complaining of abdominal pain, it had to be today… The day she was babysitting. Running a hand through her now faded purple hair she gave a deep sigh. “FML,” she muttered to herself.
-----------------------------------------------
With a weary groan, Mark strode through the huge automatic doors of the massive hospital. He stood in the entrance for a second to take off his sunglasses and re-orient himself to the familiar settings. He smiled after a second when he spotted the reception desk and nurses’ station in the center of the large room. Walking over he leaned down a bit and cleared his throat to get the attention of the human nurse behind the computer. “Hey Melissa…my dad in his office? I brought him some new clothes,” he said with a friendly grin and slightly raising the duffle bag in his hand.
The young nurse looked at the towering 18 year old, and smirked up at him. “Oh, being the well-trained son now are we? Well you’re in luck cause your dad is hiding out in his office till you get those clothes to him.” “Good, Id rather not have to play “Marco-Polo” over the PA system with him,” he said straightening and starting down a hallway to his right. “Well I’ll just leave you alone then and go find him.”
The young nurse laughed, “Don’t worry..your dad needs you more than I do right now. OH! Wait..,” pausing the pretty nurse looked up at Mark, who had turned back to look inquisitively down at her. “Actually, can you be amazing and take a clipboard to someone? She’s brought her younger cousin in and I need some more info from her. She’s on your way, just down the left turn of the hallway there and sitting in the waiting room. You cant miss this girl….and her name is Pricilla,” she finished with a small hopeful smile and a tilt of her head.
Mark smiled back at her. “Of course. Not like I can say no to you.” Leaning down, he reached out and grabbed the clipboard from her. The human-sized clipboard almost disappeared in his huge hand. With another smile, Mark walked down the hall towards the waiting area.
The giant almost enjoyed being in this hospital. It was one of the most integrated places in the area and he hardly felt like he stood out. As always, he was careful where he walked and remained watchful for little kids that could run out when he wasn’t looking. But as he turned down the left hallway, he automatically saw the human girl that the nurse had talked about. ‘Oh crap..its the Lollipop.’
-----------------------------------------------
Priscilla was pissed off, annoyed, and just grumpy in general glaring at anyone who DARED give her an odd look. Sure, her fashion taste and hair color begged for odd looks and Priscilla normally didn’t give a shit, but Priscilla was just NOT in the mood. Throwing her hands up in the air, she growled, “Where is that goddamned doctor…nurse…whatever!!!!”
This got her many dirty looks from the mothers in the room, while a bunch of children giggled and snickered at the “cuss” word. One mother even had the nerve to speak up. “Young Lady, there’s CHILDREN in this room!”
Blushing slightly at her outburst and realizing that maybe wasn’t the smartest things to do, she looked down at her lap…saying nothing. But this, in short, didn’t change much. It only took 5 seconds before the anger and annoyance to return. Running a hand through her short purple hair, she gave a sigh and looked up casually towards the hallway…That’s when she saw HIM.
-----------------------------------------------
Making sure that his mouth hadn’t fallen open, Mark squared his considerably large shoulders and started toward the purple haired girl. ‘Oy…as if this day hadn’t started out so well already,’ he thought sarcastically.
Earlier this morning, Mark had been woken up by a call from his dad who had a kid vomit all over the front of his clothes. So being the good son he was, Mark had rolled himself from his bed at the ungodly hour of 10 am and hurried over. ‘And now Ive got to deal with the world crankiest and most purple human girl,’ the young giant thought as he almost too causally walked toward the seated girl.
Though he wanted to chuckle at his own joke, Mark just couldn’t bring himself to do it. Since that day at the carnival, Mark had thought about the purple haired human a lot. He wondered if there had been a better way to handle the situation. He could easily understand her annoyance that day at being stared at; if anything he had been in a bad mood himself for the same reason. Sighing, Mark moaned at his lack of smoothness when around girls. ‘Especially interesting ones.’
His steps slowed as he reached the girl’s chair. Putting on a friendly, though still nervous smile, Mark slouched down a bit so that he didn’t tower over her so much. “Unh….hey…I was heading to my dad’s office and the nurse at the front asked me to give this to you..guess she needs more info on your cousin.” He reached out with the small clipboard and offered it to her. thinking quickly, Mark tried to think of a way to keep the conversation going so that he could bring up that day a couple of months back……..maybe even apologize?
“Umm…soo…whats wrong with your cousin?” Mentally kicking himself for asking so rudely and bluntly, Mark reached up and pushed his sunglasses back into the chest pocket on the plain v-necked tee before they fell out completely.
-----------------------------------------------
Priscilla was slightly surprised the giant didn’t verbally, in any way, show his recognition of her. Though she KNEW he did. She could see it in his eyes. Before she could growl/shout “YOU! What the hell do you want!?” to embarrass him…or for at least shits and giggles, he spoke up. “Unh...Hey…I was heading to my dad’s office and the nurse at the front asked me to give this to you…guess she needs the info on your cousin.” He’s the Doctor’s SON…Meh... I guess it wouldn’t have been smart to tell off the doctor’s son right now ( >>; )….good thing he talked first….Spared ME embarrassment ( -_-; ). Hearing his question (a rather weird and awkward question if she may add) and after regaining her composure, she answered the young man’s question, “Eh? What’s wrong with him? Well…I haven’t the foggiest, actually…That’s kind of why... you know... I brought him to the Doctor’s,” she added in a sort of “duuuh”-like tone.
-----------------------------------------------
“O-oh..yah..,” Mark said, turning his head to look the other way and hide his embarrassed flush. Not only was he uncomfortable trying to have a conversation with a girl that seemed to hate him from the first moment they talked, but he was just making an ass out of himself now.
‘She has to be worried about her cousin and that’s why she’s so……grumpy…and that day she was just pissed…so Im just catching her at all the wrong moments,’ the giant thought with some frustration. Biting the inside of his lip, he looked back to the girl. Though the waiting area she was sitting in had floors that were elevated about three feet above the main floor, with her sitting, the top of her downturned purple head was still only level with his upper thigh.
There was such a difference between them, and the one meeting they had…well it had been rather disastrous. But despite all the problems he was still finding himself attracted to her. ‘Maybe purple is just my color,’ he thought ironically as he reached up and rubbed his hand over mouth.
“Sooo…ummm..look, if u want you can come with me and my dad can get an update on your cousin,” he said with he hoped was a helpful tone. Letting out a deep breath, a small smile pulled at his lips, “you know..seeing how I wasn’t quiet so helpful the first time we met.”
-----------------------------------------------
The dead silence after the “O-oh…Yah” was excruciating… ‘Seriously….If awkwardness was an axe-wielding psycho-path we’d both be dead………….. We the hell did I get that analogy from…?’ Mentally shaking her head free of her odd thoughts, she looked up (way up) at the young man whom, at the moment, was rubbing his hand over his mouth in some sort of thought while looking at her …oddly. She recognized the look in his eyes though. She had gotten it before. She mentally smirked. ‘He diggs me,’ she thought almost sinisterly. However, her evil plotting of what exactly to “do to him” was interrupted as the giant spoke up again.
“Sooo…ummm… look, if you want you can come with me and my dad can get an update on your cousin. You know… Seeing how I wasn’t quite so helpful the first time we met.”
Priscilla looked up, slightly stunned, before sighing. ‘Why must he be so goddamned nice! MEH!’ Giving yet another sigh, she looked up with a slight smile of her own as if saying “I give…”. She then spoke up briefly, “O-oh…That would be nice……….”
