((A Halloween Short story.... Enjoy!))
It all started with a dare. Alexa crept slowly up to the huge wooden double doors. She ran her hands across the nitched and scarred surface looking for a way in. From behind the bushes that ringed the old abandoned house, he firends snickered and giggled. Pouting, the brunette pounded on the wood with her slender hands and her slim shoulders.
"That's right!," her soon-to-be-ex whooped, "Be a man!" He pumped a fist into the air. She snarled at him before giving the door a sharp kick. The door slowly opened inward. Alexa had only hoped that it would not budge. A knife-like chill ran through the air.
"Go away," a whispering voice hissed, "Please. Go away." The door started to close as Alexa's friends ran screaming. Phil, the boyfriend, turned around to see Alexa running into the shutting doors.
"Alexa! We were joking! No!" he shouted. dispite the fights they were going through, he loved her. The doors slammed closed, locking him out and Alexa inside.
She heard Phil's screams get cut off. She could not see a thing in the dark of the dusty, moldy house. A groan echoed in the air, thick with sadness. She heard footsteps, impossibly loud footsteps, in the same room she was hiding in.
"Alex..." sighed the large voice from before, "I'm...sorry." The footsteps moved on, out of the room and into one of the vast halls. Alexa pulled out her cell phone and used the meager light from the screen to light her way. Hearing the muffled cried for her to go back outside, she pursed her cherry red lips. He fake lime colored fairy wings bounced against her shoulders as she went deeper into the haunted house. She followed the still warm tears that littered the floor as her trail. She could not make out the impressions in the dust for the life of her, or she may have just turned back around. Something cold went through her, tugging her to the right into the belly of the vast home.
He was a small, brunette boy with glimmering green eyes and a ripped simple white tunic. His face was battered and bruised.
"Mentor is this way!" he laughed running off into the dark. A dim light shown from his body, lighting Alexa's way. She was frozen in fear.
"Who are you?" she gasped breathlessly.
"Alexander. I was Mentor's friend once. And it is my fault. Come. Mentor is this way," he sighed sadly motioning for her to follow. When she did not, he grabbed her hand in his. Her blood froze to ice and goosebumps suddenly littered her arms causing her hair to stand on end. He gazed at her serenely, though she could see right through him.
"Mentor does not know I am here, he cannot know I am still here," he stated, "He does not know you are finally here either. Come. Mentor is this way." He tugged her, causing the dressed up human to move. He lead her to a large room that smelled of dust and books, an ancient library. She heard moaning and sobbing. Warmth returned to her fingers in a rush, Alexander leaving her in the dark. She squeaked in surprise.
"Who is here?" rumbled a voice. A small light was lit and Alexa gasped in horror.

Blood, there was so much blood on his form. It poured from a jagged wound in his neck. His eyes were a disturbing milky blue color, the same blue you would find on those who were blind. Alexa could see the flickering candle from behind the giant's transparent chest.
He fixed his gaze on the helpless girl. A gasp escaped his pale lips. His features sunk into a frown.
"You are not suppossed to be here," he bluntly said curling up into his chair. A human sized book fell from his lap with a loud noise. As Alexa's attention was torn form him, the giant took the oppertunity to compleatly vanish from human eyes. She looked up to see nothing but the candle and the midnight toned velvet of the large chair.
As she crawled to the book, she could hear his soft sobbing. The noise broke her heart. She remembered the name the other ghost had called him.
"M-Mentor?" she called out to him. A large tear dripped onto her arm. Trembling reached her from either side of her through the hardwood floor. She saw the faint form of footprints in the thick dust on the library.
"You...you know my name?" came the giant's thin voice. She cringed and scuttled backwards as he reappeared before her, leaning down as far as the sitting position would allow. His milky eyes scanned over her.
"Alexander?" he gasped, more tears coming to his eyes, "But... they killed you!" He lifted a shaking hand to Alexa, who forced herself to remain calm and utterly still. He wasn't going to eat her, dead things didn't eat unless they were zombies. And Mentor was a ghost, a lost spirit, not a zombie. He would not have been so mysteriously ugly yet beautiful if her were a zombie. His transparent hand touched her face. Instead of freezing, his touch was warm.
"Mentor," she found herself saying, "What have you done to yourself?" The hand withdrew as if it had been struck.
"I couldn't live with myself after you were killed. I took your father's blade to my throat and followed you. But you weren't there! Where have you been Alexander?" The giant's tone became hard and cold. He wrapped Alexa in a frozen fist, the warmth gone from his hand. If his icy touch did not kill her then the force behind it would. She cried out in alarm.
"Please don't!" she screamed. He rose, with her in tow and regarded her with a look of shock.
"You are not Alexander," he gasped, "Who? Who are you?" He let Alexa drop into his other palm. She looked down and saw right through his ghostly flesh and to the floor. She began to quake with fear.
"I'm Alexa... Please don't drop me Mr. Mentor!" she yelped crawling to grab onto his thick fingers. He didn't say anything or move for the longest time.
"I thought he had returned to me," the ghost sighed, "I was wrong. Forgive me? Now that I think of it, what are you dressed as if not a human?" The confused look he wore was gentle and curious. It brought a bubble of laughter to Alexa.
"I'm a fairy. It is Halloween!" she replied looking up at him. His skin grew warm under her once again.
"Halloween?" he boomed, confusion clear in his voice.
"Yeah!" Alexa replied gaining zeal to her voice, "It is the last day of October and the day when spirits walk the earth... like you! Are you here because of Halloween?"
"Ah All Hallow's Eve. I see now," Mentor stated, a smile finally breaking free, "No. No, I have been here since my suicide." Alexa gasped, her face growing white. This man had killed himself?
"Why did you kill yourself? And what does Alexander mean? Is he that boy I saw?" Alexa asked him. Suddenly, with a lurch, the giant began to move. He eyes were hard, determined. His free hand clutched his neck tenderly.
"I will tell you, but in another room," he grunted moving through the house fast.

Hmm, it would seem Alexander was a sort of spirit as well. I think? o.o; I'm also thinking there's a reason Alexa's name is similar to Alexander ... HMM interesting, yeeesss.

All the rooms seemed to flash by as he walked through the vast house at a brisk pace. Mentor’s steps kicked up little puffs of dust as he made his way. As if understand their master was passing, the candles on either side of the halls lit brightly. His shining hair, turned a dusty black color in death, swirled around his shoulders. His eyes, unseeing yet seeing, scanned the guest rooms until he suddenly stopped. He turned to face a large set of wooden doors.
“I built this place,” he stated causing Alexa to jump at the sound of his voice, “This was my room once.” He seemed sad, immensely sad. His eyes scanned the dusty handle. He bit on his lip in concentration as he turned the crystal covered handle slowly. He pushed open one of the magnificent doors and entered the room. He whispered something, but Alexa knew not what he said. Lights flared to life in the room.
A blanket of white dust lay on the dark hardwood floor. No footprints marred the layer of white. A huge bed, draped in a dark blue, sat unused near the far wall. Twin desks surrounded it. Near every main piece of furniture was a staircase so that a human could climb onto the surfaces. The ghostly giant moved to sit on the bed. Alexa coughed lightly as a cloud of dust billowed about her. Mentor set her carefully on the sheet.
“Alexander was my first and only true friend,” Mentor admitted, “He was all I cared about. An orphaned boy living with an orphaned giant, perfect right? We lived together for some time, until his people became angry with him. They stoned Alexander to death and I, in my grief, took up the only thing the boy had and killed myself with his father’s sword.” He turned his eyes away from Alexa, suddenly shamed by the foul deed that left him a ghost. He felt her pat his hand.
“Can I help you?” Alexa asked in a small, tear-choked voice. Mentor smiled softly.
“You are just like Alexander. Maybe you can.”

Mentor’s smile began to slowly fade as his pale eyes darted to the door. A scowl wrinkled the ghost’s features. He moved to rise from his perch. Alexa tried grappling one of his thick fingers to have her hands pass through him. The blood on his neck shown with moonlight, dripping down his neck in a sad fashion.
“Mentor!” she called to him. He looked at her, his rough features immediately smoothing out.
“We have an intruder. Do not worry. I will take care of it,” he soothed before rising to his feet and vanishing all together.
“No Mentor!” she cried, but the giant was gone. Two small warm hands grabbed her waist. She spun around in horror only to relax at the sight of the ghostly Alexander. The boy wore a smile and the cuts and bruises on him shined brightly.
“I am with you. Thank you for being my medium,” the boy sighed. Alexa could only mutter an apology of what happened to him. He shook his head.
“I was happy with Mentor,” he beamed, “But now I must stop him from going back on his promise. Will you help me?” Alexa blankly nodded and the hands around her tightened. With a flash, time seemed to stop. She gazed up at Mentor’s strong back with awe. Alexander grabbed her hand and ran to the kneeling giant’s leg and through it, girl in tow, drawing a gasp from the giant.
“Alexa!” Phil cried as she ran to him.
“Mentor! He is my friend!” Alexa shouted to the giant. Mentor’s facial features were warped in shock.
“Mentor, remember your promise!” she and Alexander cried at the same time. Mentor withdrew his vast hand and cupped it to his chest. He turned his hurt eyes onto the small girl.
“He entered my home without me knowing,” the giant accused in a tiny voice.
“But you promised to bring no harm to humans,” Alexander stated through Alexa, “Remember?”
“The only one who would know is….” Mentor breathed. He reached forward and touched Alexa’s cheek gently, tenderly. “Alexander?”
“I returned to save you,” the ghost boy laughed through Alexa, “Though sadly, you cannot see me. Return to heaven with me, please? Be at rest. It was never your fault I died.” The boy’s smile was genuine; he wanted his best friend to know that their love was not lost. Mentor pulled his hand back, as if he had been burned.
“I cannot leave,” he sighed, “I was at fault killing myself. I… am not ready to leave yet. Please understand, my friend?” His eyes pleaded his good friend to let him be.
“I’ll help you,” Phil stated moving forward, “Cause I’m sure Alexa wants to also.” Alexander looked at the man and nodded slowly, a bright smile alighting Alexa’s features.
“I leave you in good hands,” Alexander called up to his friend, “Happy Halloween.” He walked free from Alexa, his small formless spirit melding into nothing but a ball of light.
"Thank you Alexa for reuniting me with my old friend. Take good care of him and yourself for me!" With that, Alexander was at peace. He returned to the plane where all good spirits go, the plane he called home since his death. Mentor's massive hand went to his throat as if to stifle the flow of blood.
"I still frighten the two of you, do I not?" he sighed. Phil wrapped his arms around Alexa's waist.
"I would be lying if I said you didn't," he stated, "But if Alexa trusts you, so do I." Alexa elbowed his ribs playfully. Mentor's laughter washed over the pair like a strong gale of fall wind.
"Happy Halloween indeed!" he chuckled, "This is the best day I have had since my death. Thank you. I am at peace with you humans." He offered the pair one of his massive hands.
"He's a ghost... can he really pick us up?" Phil whispered into Alexa's ear. She elbowed him again, harder this time. He was still an idiot. They stumbled into his hand and he bore them to the front door. The massive carved wooden entryway had been slightly opened when Phil forced his way in. The boy looked up to find Mentor staring at him. Blush tinted the ghost's cheeks as Mentor was stared at in return.
"Um..." the ghost stammered clearing his torn throat, "You are a human too, yes? Not a...what are you?" Phil looked at his ruined butler outfit.
"I am a human," he sighed running a hand in his thin hair, "I was dressed up as a butler, but your door ate it." Mentor's pink deepened. He muttered an apology.
"Don't worry about it. I was just worried for Alexa," Phil shrugged off the incident.
"You are an item yes?" Mentor quietly asked turning his eyes to look at his feet.
"Yes, we still are," Alexa answered for him. Phil smiled softly before suddenly lurching forward as Mentor knelt. The giant let them back onto the dusty floor and pushed open the heavy doors. The golden sunrise met them. Mentor gasped as he leaned against the doorframe. He felt the humans pass through his legs. His attention was snapped down at them, both humans had a hand on where his shimmering outline was. A smile stretched across Mentor's features.
"Return soon," he sighed, "I will always be here to open the door for you. Thank you both, for everything." Before he started crying again, the giant faded from human view.
"Mentor huh?" Phil mused to himself, "He's a good guy...er ghost. Scary, but good."
"Yeah," Alexa smiled taking Phil's hand in hers, "And so are you. You both are good guys." They walked home holding hands, the doors closing behind the two. And as for Mentor, he was happy waiting in the library for his human friends to return to visit.
