He was not like other angels. He was a Watcher, a group of psyical angels that were sent to mingle with and help the human race at a more personal level. He stayed far away from the humans he was suppossed to cherish though. He was an odd Watcher. He was absolutly terrified of the humans. There were so many things that could go wrong with the strange relationships the Watchers tended to form. They went only as far as living with the humans in their towns. Penemue watched the humans in the town that lay streached out before him from a good distance. The only items he held in his large, gentle hands was a diamond dove patterened quill made from one of his own flight feathers and a thick stack of abnormally large parchment. His quill scratched flowing words across the yellowed paper. He would look up, his bronzed eyes softly gazing at the people of the town, before once again writing on his paper.
"Their love is immense," he found himself musing aloud with a soft smile playing on his lips, "Sometimes I cannot help but to be drawn to them." Looking behind himself, Penemue found no humans sneaking up on him. He flared his pale speckles grey wings and flopped back onto the ground, the tall grass caressing any skin left out in the open. A deep sigh welled up in his massive chest before being pushed out. His bronze eyes closed, his long tangled tarnished gold hair puffing against his broad winged shoulders with the breeze. One massive hand lay to rest on the parchment, quill tangled in their lengths. The sun warmed his immense form as the wind kept him cool. It was a beautiful summer day for the angel.
His breathing slowed and relaxed. The worry lines all but vanished. The angel fell into a peacefull sleep becoming unaware of the world around him.

Sounds good so far. And somehow it partly reminds me of "The Unfinished Angel" by Sharon Creech.....the angel in there doesn't like or understand humans at all either.

The ground shuddered slightly under the feet of the two children. The older of the two, a girl with flaming red hair, giggled loudly. She grabbed the arm of her younger brother and spun him around.
"I think he is back today. Think we'll see him?" she laughed brightly. Her brother shrugged without saying a word to his sister's disappointment.
"Come on Moses! This should be exciting! Angels are all suppossed to be nice after all. Don't worry!" Moses nodded with a small tint of blush coloring his cheeks. He ducked his head down so his red bangs covered his blue eyes. He was nervous approaching this strange angel. Most people avoided the grey winged giant for many reasons, the fact that he avoided them being the top of the list. But these two children did not care. Their sister had left in a hurry forgetting to remind the two to let the angel alone, so it automatically became free game.
"Diane," her little brother squeaked, "what if sister catches us or if Mr. Angel doesn't want to see us?" Both were good questions, but Diane had a simple answer.
"Look!" she exclaimed in a hushed voice. Moses looked and felt his breath catch in his small chest. The tips of large grey feathers lay streached before the two. Moses, as if in a trance, moved forward and touched one of the stiff flight feathers. It tickled his hand. Diane followed suit, but did not remain rooted to the spot. She followed the long curving feathers to the wing joint itself. A great rolling shoulder framed by dirty gold hair was connected to the wing.
"He's huge," Diane breathed trying to look straight up at his upturned face in vain. As she backed up to get a better look, she tripped over something large and long. His curved fingers twitched under her sprawled legs as she froze waiting for the giant angel to wake. He didn't even though she stepped on his hand and Moses was frolicking on top of the angel's wings.
Diane stood and looked at the surface she had falled on. It was like the rare paper at home. Looped foreign words covered a good bit of the page written in a deep black ink. She was amazed by the beauty of the strange unreadable language.
"Sister look!" whooped Moses. She looked at where the boy used to be to find that he had climbed onto the giant's tunic covered chest that rose and fell with powerful breath.
"Sister I can feel his heartbeat!" cried Moses laying down over the giant's heart. It's strong beat thudding through the boy's frame. Diane smiled, but the gesture soon faded when a moan coarsed through the air. The massive hand before Diane tensed up as the strong arm began to raise the giant upright. All Moses could do was hold on tightly to the beige tunic the giant wore. A yawn ripped past his lips expelling sleep from him. Penemue looked down at Diane, who smiled nervously and waved. Penemue's eyes widened as he scrambled backwards, oddly away from the tiny human.
It was as if the roles changed and Penemue was terrified of her. Moses could feel his fear and it seemed to dispell his own.
"You don't have to be scared of us!" he piped up bringing the wide bronze eyes to gaze down at him. Penemue froze, not knowing what to do.

Moses' grip tightened against Penemue's clothes. The angel's frightened heartbeat pounded chaoticly against the boy. Penemue's wings flared behind him quivering with fear.
"How did you find me?" the angel hoarsly asked, his hushed voice almost a dull mumble. Moses heard Diane laugh.
"You are kinda hard to miss, Mr. Angel," she pointed out sitting on his beloved notes. He stared blankly at her before deciding to get the struggling human off his body. He hesitated in plucking Moses off by his clothes or limbs.
"How do I get you down?" he muttered a bit put off by how fragile humans were. And their apparent stupidity. Why would this boy even dream of climbing on top of him, Penemue asked himself mentally. He moved forward gently so that he sat on his knees. Tucking his wings close behind him Penemue placed both large hands on the earth and leaned forward. Moses let go and dropped to the ground, the massive angel blotting out the sun. Penemue raised himself from the akward bow slowly as if to not bring about any sudden screaming. He hated the sound of screaming. He stared blankly at the two amazed humans before him, his bare toes curled against the ground in anxious nerves.
"I'm Diane!" The girl explained, her red braid bouncing with her self-assured nod. Her green eyes were filled with a spark of life.
"A-and I'm Moses," the boy coyly said. His watery blue eyes were gentle. Penemue made it a point to look both in the eye as they spoke. They waited for Penemue to say something, anything.
"Penemue," he sheepishly stated, blush tinting his pale, almost translucent, complexion. The humans tried to say his name and failed.
"Hold on you two," he bluntly stated, "it is Pen-a-moo-way. Can you say that?" Neither of them could.
"I am sorry Pen, I don't get it," Diane sighed. Moses was crying. Penemue stared at him blankly for a moment before leaning close to the boy.
"Shhhh Moses," the angel whipsered, his angelic nuturing nature ridding him of the fear of the small humans, "What is wrong? Did I make you cry?" Moses shook his head. He felt the tip of one of Penemue's huge fingers brush against his face.
"So I didn't hurt you?" the angel asked.
"I want to be your friend," Moses sniffled, "but I can't say your name!" A soft smile played on Penemue's features.
"I guess call me something you can say," he told Moses. Moses thought hard about it.
"What about my sister called you?" He asked the giant, who sat back down, "Pen?"

"Or Penny!" piped up Diane with an impish grin. Penemue groaned in a low voice, a smile growing on his lips. Though it was better than Pen. Pen reminded him of the warning Archangel Gabriel had offered him. He had taught a few humans to read and to write, which was against God's will. So the watcher had been trying to lay low as his brothers continue to teach humans arts, forbidden and otherwise.
"Penny? You look sad," Diane's clear voice cut the angel's dark thoughts. He shook his head and turned his attention back down at the siblings. His bronze eyes softened.
"No," mumbled the angel in his airy voice, "I was just thinking..."
"Why are you afraid of us?" Moses asked moving onto Penemue's notes to be with his sister. Both sets of youthful eyes stared up at him.
"You two," the angel gulped in apprehension, "are so small and frail. I don't want to hurt you. And that makes me afraid." In reality being with these children was not the watcher's idea of laying low. And he was sure Gabriel would agree.
"Penny is a better name," he sighed standing. He looked towards the town. He was going to have to take them home. A shudder ran through him.
"Come children, I will take you home," he stated looking at the small figures near his bare feet. Diane nodded understandingly. She stood and took her brother's hand tightly in hers. As soon as they stepped down from the parchment, the giant reached over them and plucked it from the tall grass. He rolled it and stuck it in his rope belt alongside his quill.
Penemue began to walk toward the town, the children following as best they could. He turned around to see them running to catch up with his strides. He looked at his hands, cupping them together.
"Come here children," he softly beckoned laying his hands to the earth. The 48 foot tall angel scooped up the giggling children and began to carry them close to his pounding heart.

Lucia ran madly through the tall grass of the field towards where Penemue had been resting. Her long red hair streamed behind her like a banner. Someone in the market had claimed her little brother and sister went in the direction of the angel.
"You better not have," she threatened the situtation. Though in her heart she knew they had gone to see the strange watcher.
Just as she reached the center of the field leading to the angel's hill, a shadow passed over her.
"I am going to fly. Hold on," a larger than life voice boomed. A sudden surge of wind knocked the poor human to the ground and tumbling backwards a bit. Lucia thought she heard her name called out.
"Whoa, don't do that!" the voice scolded and the ground gave a terrible shudder. On either side of Lucia loomed tall pillers of pale flesh, the giant angel's legs. She screamed, a loud shrill sound. The giant stepped back to take a look at the maker of the horrid noise.
"There is no need for that," he grunted a bit disgruntled, "I am an angel and will not hurt any humans according to my oath."
"My little siblings!" yelped the woman trying her best to calm down in the shadow of the angel, "Were they with you Sir Angel?" The angel nodded with a blank expression.
"Penny that was fun! Fly again!" Diane whooped. Moses disagreed.
"Diane! Moses!" barked Lucia, "You both are in trouble!" The children grew quiet. The giant chuckled.
"Don't be too hard on them," he stated slowly lowering his hands, "Do you want me to take you home too? I think there is room enough...I promise to just walk."

There wasn't really enough room in his hands to hold two squirming children and the larger girl. She held tightly onto his thumb as he searched for a better option. He offered her his winged shoulder with a meek, sheepish expression. She dropped tenderly onto it amd grasped his tunic in a hard grip. He noticed his hair was getting in Lucia's way.
"Children, I am going to put you both in the same hand. Bare with me and do not move," he warned them. He turned one hand and watched as Moses joined his sister with a small squeak.
Penemue, satisfied that they wouldn't move too much, bit and pulled loose a long black ribbon. With the hand opposite from where Lucia was sitting, he pulled back his messy hair, grass falling from its tarnished gold waves. After looping the ribbon around, he dipped his head forward so he could better pull it tight with one hand. When he tamed his hair, he rejoined his hands and the children sprawled across both.
"I should have done that to begin with," he muttered feeling Lucia's shivering with his lack of movement, "Should have really planned this better."
"Penny can we fly?" whined Diane with a pleading look in her eyes. "Not now little Diane," Penemue stated taking one step forward. He heard Lucia's gasp and his heart fluttered in nerves.
"Tell me if you are not comfortable with this Miss," he stated with a few more steps.
"I will be fine. Besides my siblings seem to like you well enough, Sir Angel," Lucia nervously laughed. Her white knuckled grip on the angel's clothes did not let up though.
"We love Penny!" Moses chirped up causing the giant of an angel to chuckle brightly. Penemue felt the boy's arms wrap around one of his long curving fingers. Moses felt the finger twitch in responce and attempt to slightly curl around him on impulse.
"Penny?" Lucia mused.
"Short for Penemue," the giant snorted as he went out of his way to avoid the town.
"Penemue...what an exotic name," the human on his shoulder sighed just loud enough for Penemue to hear, "I am Lucia." He repeated her name, the word rolling off his tongue easily.
"It..." Penemue stumbled over the sentence, "is really nice to meet all of you." Blush tinted his cheeks as all the humans on his person laughed at his shyness.
"I am guessing you live in that house a bit away from the town," he grunted.
"That is my house!" Moses exclaimed pointing to the very house Penemue spoke of. A smile crept on the giant's lips.
"Sister!" Diane begged looking up at her sister, "Can Penny stay for a while? It would be a good birthday present for me!"
"I...I..." the angel stammered in suprise.
